Unus had no idea how long he had been sitting into Marvin's study. It didn't have a day and night cycle like Mark's house, and at one point, his mind just turned off. He stared at the room, but his eyes didn't register any of the things in it. It felt as if he was merely an observer, watching himself out of the first perspective. He felt neither the cold stone floor nor the silence that enveloped everything as slowly as the dust that would inevitably cover the room one day.
His brain felt empty, but not in an meditative way. No, he was tired. Tired of the constant danger. Tired of Dark. Tired of seeing Annus hurt. Part of him wanted to keep sitting here, in this state of unthinking. Endlessly caught up in the moment until the clock had ticked down. After all, almost a hundred days had already passed, and they hadn't gotten one step closer to leaving the Machine.
He closed his eyes, listening to the inner workings of it. The yeagers were as idle as can be. It was strangely reassuring to feel them. They just belonged to the Machine.
He felt Dark, and Annus. It scared him how dim his light was.Unus opened his eyes. He stretched his legs, and they tingled as the blood flowed through them. He got up, shakier than he had expected, and stepped back through the portal. Dark was sitting on the couch, his hands neatly folded over his crossed legs.
»It was your blood that made Marvin the way he is, right?« His voice sounded dry.
»Paired with a spell of his, yes.«
»Can the same happen to Annus?«
»I don't know. He's reacting differently. We can only wait.«The feeling that Unus felt in his chest was hard to describe. Hate would have been burning hot, or cold as ice. It wasn't determination either. He simply knew that he could let actions follow his next words.
»Marvin once said that the blood carries the energy of a person. If your influence corrupts people like Marvin and Annus, maybe the only way out is to take your energy out of the equation.«
»If I do not exist anymore, my influence will be gone as well,« Dark repeated. »An interesting theory, but I wouldn't test it if I were you.« He walked up to Unus until their faces were mere inches away from each other. »You have enough enemies as it is. Who knows what might happen if you antagonize me as well.«Unus didn't let himself be intimidated. »Yeah, who knows? Could get real dirty.« He held eye contact, staring into the white abyss.
The situation was interrupted by a loud bang from upstairs. He turned his head, before spriting up the stairs, taking two steps at once.Annus stood in the middle of the room. Fresh blood soaked the bandage on his shoulder, the wound opened from hasty movement. His hair was shaggy and he had a wild look in his eyes. Hunched over and covered in his bedsheet, he looked at Unus like a deer in the headlights.
»Annus, it's me. Unus.« He spoke slowly and clearly, like trying to calm a panicked animal. »We're back at the house. You're safe.«After a second of silence, the wild shimmer in Annus's eyes cleared up. »Unus?«
»I'm here buddy. You've been hurt. Try not to move to much.«
»Where's Marvin.«
He shook his head. »We can talk about that later.« Unus tried to sound positive, but he knew that he couldn't hide the truth from his friend.
