The device came to live, fizzling sparks into all directions. It lit op in a bright golden glow. It was like looking into a flashlight.
Annus blinked, trying to get the spots dancing in front of his eyes to leave.
Something brushed against his legs. Startled, he made a step sideways.
The golden furred animal turned around, her tongue hanging out of her mouth, wildly wagging her tail.
»Chica?« Annus exclaimed. He squatted down, greeting the happy dog with open arms. Chica hopped up and down, licking at his face, turning around herself in his arms. Her tail was going on circles like a helicopter blade. In the kitchen, Unus peeked underneath the table. A smaller canine with large ears and patchy white and dark fur looked up to him with big eyes.
He made a delighted noise and sat down on the floor. Spencer came over, snuggling against his chest and cuddling up in his lap.
The man in the black suit looked up to Marvin with teary eyes. »It's Spencer,« he managed to say.»Will the dogs be ok in here?« Annus asked, trying to keep his voice down as not to unsettle Unus.
»They're not actually the real dogs,« Marvin explained. »They're copies I created. Like a powerful illusion you can touch.«
Although Annus wasn't quite sure if he liked that his mind could be tricked as easy as that, he was happy that Chica was here.»It's gonna be alright, buddy,« Unus said with a soft voice, stroking the fur between Spencer's ears. »We'll get out of here.«
Annus sat down next to him on the floor. »Yeah, we will. We'll find a way out of here.«
He reached out, scratching the small dog's back. Spencer stretched out, yawned, and rolled himself back up in Unus's lap.
They sat there until the sun set. Annus had never realized it, but the safe room apparently had a day and night cycle. Natural light fell through the windows during the day, although the outside world was blurred by the glass.
The light that illuminated the room now was a bright orange, almost red one. Annus could see the outline of a beautiful sunset through the windows.
With the night came the quiet. Only this time, the silence didn't feel deafening. On the contrary, it felt calm.Somehow, they ended up in the living room, Unus laying on the couch, Annus on the floor.
And as the darkness wrapped them in like a blanket, the large house didn't feel as empty anymore.
