The dial tone rung five times before Abe finally picked up. »Whassgoinon?« he slurred, half asleep. »Hey Abe, it's me, Luís. I think I found something. You told me Mark grew up in a big manor, right?« Lixian was talking so fast, he nearly stumbled over his own words. »Well that doesn't add up with the stories his family posted. They could have never afforded such a big house. Do you know what could be up with that?«
At the other end of the line, the Detective rubbed the sleep out of his eyes, yawned, and put the phone back to his ear. »Listen kiddo, they must be lyin'. I don't know why they would to that, but I remember the manor. Vividly. Mark and the Colonel defaaaaah...«
»Abe?«
Abe sat at the edge of his bed, rubbing his chin in disbelief. »Ga a a anghk, « he managed to blurt out. His tongue didn't move. It laid still in his mouth like a snake without head. Was he having a stroke? He ignored Luís rising panic on the other end of the line. His face felt fine. He could lift his arms. He knew his name, he could see clearly, and as he checked the bathroom mirror, he was greeted with a face sporting tired eyes and worry lines, but no lameness.
»Ahahuhech,« he tried to say. Probably not the right state to try and pronounce without a tongue. But at least it showed him that only his speech was affected.He hung up, and quickly typed an SMS. »Physically unable to talk. Coming over in 30.«
