Luís rubbed his temples, staring at the screen in front of him. His laptop rested on the table next to the bed. The hotel room was cramped, but he didn't care. The blue light was hurting his eyes. He took another swing from the cheap vending machine coffee. His brain was begging for him to get some sleep at this point, but he shushed it. He was close to some kind of break through, he could feel that .
Itwas both surprising and scary how much you could find about a person on the internet. Within a few hours of research, he had found Marks high school, his university, some videos from when he was only starting out, his mother's Instagram account and multiple fan pages dedicated to his dog.He leaned back with a sigh. Everything seemed so perfectly normal. Too perfectly normal. Normal people crafted an internet personality over time, some more carefully than others. But with Mark, it felt like everything was crafted. Down to the last detail. Not just online, but every aspect of his personal life as well.
There had to be something. Something that didn't fit the metric. Something that was off, a small crack on the stained glass window. So he dug deeper, hopping from old fan blogs to YouTube videos with only a handful of views to comments people made years ago. Hell, he even checked Twitter. He did not dare to check the time when he finally found a clue. The sun had not risen yet, so it couldn't be that late. His eyes stared at the blue link in front of him like a lion at its prey. »Looking for a special kick?« The caption read. »The biggest archive of YouTubers...«
Sure, it sounded suspicious. But his computer got decent protection from viruses, so it should be fine. Probably.
He klicked the link and physically recoiled. Whatever he had expected, it surely wasn't a page full of feet pictures.
With a deadpan expression, he closed the laptop. Every person had a breaking point. In Luís case, it made him realize that the internet was one of the biggest mistakes mankind ever made.
