Siege
For every part of the supernatural realm, there was a Bookkeeper. Someone who kept stories of the truths behind the magic of each population of creatures. Book Keepers held knowledge of the far past and prophecies of what was yet to come. They held knowledge that was sacred and remarkable.
I was eleven when I first came to meet the Bookkeeper of the deep blue. My family was giving me a tour of their territory within the ocean. It was a timely tour as my family could be regarded as one of the most powerful families in the ocean. The Siren's were almost like the Vampires of the ocean. We had the same traits and selfish desires engraved in our DNA. A thirst for power that would inevitably leave many innocent dead or suffering.
When I first came to meet the Bookkeeper he straight up told me that my family couldn't stake a claim of the ocean. The ocean was a being in itself. We were all merely guests in its space. I knew I would take a great liking to him at that very moment.
I was a confused as a child. For the first ten years of my life, I lived in happiness. When my family found me and took me back, they revealed the truth of my family's misfortunes. It was all a great shock to me. All I wanted to do was to run back to where I was raised and forget about everything.
Just as I was about to run away, the Bookkeeper explained to me that the path I was taking was the right one. Everything was happening as it was intended. I trusted him enough to believe him. When I looked back at it, I should have run away.
Everything would be much simpler.
The Ocean Bookkeeper stayed in a simple holding of a sort of cave in the deepest parts of the ocean. Within his dwelling were many rooms. Rooms filled with the power of the book. Books that the Bookkeeper would read to me whenever I would visit. Up until I felt I was old enough to do so myself. The Ocean Keeper had a daughter, he said he had to leave her behind. He spoke often of her. He explained that reading the book Ocean Saga was their favorite. With that pity party, I had no choice but to let him read to me.
I was seated on the cylinder stone chair that was placed before the table I used as my reading space. I was in one of the Book Keeper's mini-libraries, reading a book I had taken from one of the shelves. The book was about everything. A summary of a few things the Bookkeeper had taught me. I was at a specific chapter, trying to figure out something that perplexed me.
"You've found her." The Book Keeper spoke to me. I looked up from my book and saw that he was standing at the door. He walked in slowly with a certain smile as he took a seat across me.
The Bookkeeper was human. His kind had evolved to be able to inhabit the ocean. It was very dangerous for him to live in the ocean as a human. I was surprised made it alive that far.
I gave him an expression that stated that I had no clue what he was talking about. I rarely ever did.
"Your flame. The one that mirrors you. The other half of your soul. It is not to be found under soulmates. It's something else entirely. You found her, no?" The Book Keeper said to me with knowing eyes and a careful tone.
I looked down at the heading of the chapter I had turned to. 'Soulmates'. I couldn't help but feel what was going on between Veéta and me was predetermined. It was beyond our choosing. I couldn't understand why I felt such intense emotions around her without knowing a single thing about her.
I looked back up at the Bookkeeper and let out a sigh.
"I don't know." I told him with a shrug. I didn't want to be talking about it. I knew I needed to. How could I carry out my family's wishes knowing she was, what did he call it?
