Virgil colored in a design with color pencils, he needed to get an idea of what color fabrics to use.
At the moment, he was sitting against a tree that had already started to lose its leaves, sketching out a design for Maggie. She likes to wear bright colors, so he used some of her favorites; green, pink, yellows, and oranges.
The suit was a small long sleeved dress with leggings underneath, she had gloves but one of the palms was cut out so she can use her powers. To be honest, he wasn't sure if she would want the gloves, but it was an iconic superhero suit piece that he had to include.
It was mostly a white suit, but the accents were her favorite colors. It was hard to find a balance for the colors since they were all so random, but he managed to make it look good. Plus, he's made outfits for her before so he already has all of her measurements.
He admits, he's closer to her than the other kids, but that's probably because she creates light and had declared that despite being opposites, they're going to be partners when they're superheroes. The moment stole Virgil's heart.
"Virgil!" he looked up with a smile when he heard Roman's voice. "So this is where you hide during the weekends."
"It's not really hiding, I'm right outside of the forest so really anyone looking here can see me," Virgil told him. "And I don't come here all the time, just when I want to work on something alone."
"Oh, sorry, I can leave if you want."
"It's fine, I finished this anyway. At least I think so, I think I'm going to need a second opinion on this. What do you think?" Virgil turned his sketchbook around to show Roman.
"It's not at all what I expected you to draw, I'll tell you that."
"Yeah, cause it's not for me. I'm designing a super suit for a little girl I'm friends with. She loves superheroes and her birthday is coming up in a few weeks so I want to give her something."
"That's so sweet! I didn't know you like little kids."
"I usually only hang out with the orphaned or disabled ones, they need a big brother." Virgil shrugged.
"Virgil, that is adorable."
"Shut up, just- what do you think of it? I used her favorite colors, but I guess maybe she likes all kinds of colors? I-I don't know, I just want to see her happy."
"I think she's going to like it, little kids like things like this, how old is she? And what's her power?"
"She's seven, and she can create light. She's missing her left hand cause, well, her light burns and she hurt herself on accident when she was younger. She doesn't like to talk about it, and was afraid of using her powers for the longest time, but she started to make light again little by little again."
"Wow, a seven year old is braver than me. I don't think I'd ever use my powers again if I burned myself that badly."
"Yeah, me too. It took me several years of exposure therapy to get over my fear of fire. I still don't like it though, no offense."
"It's fine, cause I know you like me."
"You wish," Virgil snorted.
"I think it's really sweet that you're friends with the younger kids. How did that even happen?"
"Well, we all kinda gravitated towards Thomas and so it was often that we all spent time together hanging out in his room, watching him build things. You know, at first I wanted to be a teacher just like Thomas."
"So what made you decide you wanted to protect people?"
Virgil's smile became sad. "My mom. The night my house burned down, someone was at the door. I was upstairs in my room, so I didn't see him, but I didn't recognize his voice. I heard my mom fighting with him, and I think he lashed out. The house started to burn, and my mom was calling for me. She was clearly in danger, but I was too scared to move. I don't want anyone to go through something like that, so I'm going to protect people."
"And you're not afraid?"
"I don't have much to be afraid of, the worst has already happened to me." Virgil knocked against his legs.
"What if you died?"
"Then I'll die protecting people. Besides, I know my mom is alive because they never found her. She has to be out there somewhere, I know it. And I'm going to save her."
"I'll help you, anything you need."
"Thanks, but I think it's something I need to do on my own. Besides, right now the only hero I am is the little kids hero. And I need to figure out what kind of fabric would work best for this suit, I'll go to the fabric store later."
"Do you think you can make me a super suit?" Roman asked with childish wonder in his voice.
"Really? You want a super suit? What if you grow bigger?"
"Then I can always get a bigger version. But you have great designs, I've seen the things you made! I know you can make something that will fit me!"
"I'm going to need your measurements."
"No problem!"
"And do you have a color preference? Any ideas for a color scheme?"
"It's gotta have red, and maybe white? Ooh, and gold!"
"Okay, red, white, and gold," Virgil repeated, flipping to a new page and writing it down. He put his pencil down and grabbed something out of his bag. "Here, I'm going to need chest and stomach measurements."
"Do you just carry body measuring tape with you everywhere?"
"This is my bag that I use when making designs. I need to write down the measurements for every part of the body if I'm going to make clothing for a specific person. I'm thinking... gloves, and padding on shoulders and legs, and of course the chest."
"Wow, you get really into this."
"Of course, but any armor I put on your suit is probably going to be plastic or foam, so it's not going to protect you. If you ever want to use the design for an actual suit, go to a professional to make it out of higher quality fabrics. I wonder how expensive fireproof fabrics are..."
"I'll help with that part," Roman offered.
"Nah, it's fine, I have it covered. Plus, you're not going to be allowed to see it until I'm done. Not even the designs in this sketchbook."
"Fine, that's fair."
"Yup, now let's get those measurements done. I know it seems trivial, but it's important, I am not cutting the fabric too short. It's hell trying to fix those mistakes without starting over again."

Virgil looked over the measurements he's written down again. He couldn't start working on it while Roman was there, but he can now that he was alone in his dorm.
Patton had taken his advice of hanging out with Logan more often, and they apparently were playing board games together in Logan's dorm. Virgil was invited, but he was pretty tired and was excited to start working on Roman's suit.
He started with sketching out Roman's figure, then thought about what kind of mask Roman would want. He decided the iconic superhero mask shape would do, he could mold a mask and Roman could just use skin adhesive to hold it on.
Virgil couldn't help but smile, Roman was so childish but it was adorable. And the way he looks at Virgil, a smile on his face, it brought butterflies to Virgil's stomach.
No he wasn't in love, Virgil tried to remind himself, Roman was just that great of a friend. It's only been a couple of months since school has started, but so much has happened.
They were just really good friends, even though Roman is endearing he is still annoying and Virgil wouldn't date someone like that. He was a rich annoying kid, with a heart of gold and a smile brighter than the sun.
Virgil's head fell back against the pillow, trying to ignore the butterflies in his stomach. No, he can't fall in love, especially not with Roman. It wasn't going to happen.
He went back to sketching out the outfit, putting small designs and making notes where he was going to put padding. Virgil's doing this for a friend, and for practice, nothing more.
