TW: blood, impalement, and quite a bit of violence

Roman was worried about Virgil. Homecoming had been so amazing and they were both happy, but ever since Thomas told Virgil they found his mother Virgil has been upset.

He's been jumpy, and sad, and worried all at once. He's been awfully quiet, and for a while distant, but he doesn't seem to push Roman away. By now, the other four know what had happened.

Roman tried his best to comfort Virgil without trying to push him too far. He knew Virgil needed a friend, so he stayed with Virgil whenever he could. Sadly, they didn't have many classes together.

Once the last class ended, Roman quickly went searching for Virgil. It took almost an hour, but eventually he found him in the fashion design room. He wished he checked there earlier, but he found Virgil sketching and throwing out designs.

"Hey, you doing okay?" Roman asked, sitting down next to him.

"No," Virgil answered, not looking up and tearing out another piece of paper from his sketchbook. There was already a sizable chunk torn out from the book.

"Have you talked to your therapist yet?"

"Yeah. Didn't help much."

"Well, why don't you put the pencil down, you're clearly not-" Roman cut himself off as Virgil violently scribbled out his drawing, tearing the paper.

Virgil sighed and set the pencil aside, then set his forehead against the table as his arms wrapped around my head.

Roman went to put his hand on Virgil's shoulder, then pulled back as he thought better.

"If it makes you feel better, you're mom is still alive. After seven years, she's still alive."

"What if she gets hurt? Thomas said they're going to send heroes to arrest Shadow, what if she gets hurt in the fight?"

"The heroes won't allow that."

"Fights go haywire all the time, Roman. I've watched countless fights, studied methods and moves. Even the best heroes mess up, you can't save everyone."

"You don't know that."

"Oh really? Then why weren't the doctors able to save my legs?! Or why- after seven years, did they now just find my mother?! Seven years, Roman!"

Roman struggled to find something to say to comfort Virgil. He saw the other boy deflate and look away from him again.

"I'm sorry," Virgil said after a moment. "I'm just really scared. I don't want to lose her again."

"I know. And again, I can't pretend to understand what you're going through, but I'm here for you. I just find it hard to believe that Shadow would go through so much trouble to be with your mom, to let her get hurt or die."

"I don't even know why he wants her. And... what about me? Does he even know I exist?"

Roman opened his mouth to respond, but he was cut off by a loud alarm. "Is that a war siren?!"

Virgil grabbed Roman and pulled him to the ground. He used the shadows to shut and lock the door before turning off the lights.

"This way," Virgil said, crawling towards the corner of the room.

"What's going on?" Roman asked, feeling panicked.

"Keep your voice down. It's... that's the lockdown siren."

"Is it a drill?"

"I don't know. Usually they warn students about the drill ahead of time and it's always during school hours with teachers nearby."
