"Wait here in case you need to move the car," Sam instructed as he got out of the car and walked a few metres towards the low-lying wooden house patched with timbers and zinc at the end of the alley.
"Have you called the ambulance?" Sam asked at one of the woman he recognize standing by the door to welcome him there. He did not need to go inside further to see his patient. The woman was lying on the floor on a thin worn out bed sheets with her legs covered by a thin blanket. He noticed the blood on the floor and the cry of the grandma he had treated before who was lying on her manual bed by the wall, just beside the woman who could barely open her eyes.
"Where's the ambulance!?" Sam's question now directed to the husband who was watching by the side, hugging himself while leaning on the mouldy wall behind him. He crouched down and checked the woman's pulse while trying to incite a response from the patient.
"We haven't called one." The shallow voice of the woman by the door had barely passed Sam's ears when he heard something even more shocking.
"Save my son first. She'll be okay." The cold voice was way too calm, almost eerie in the current situation. Sam didn't forget, he knew this woman who'd give him tea everytime he came in to check on the grandma and he knew that the woman was pregnant. But it's still early, way too early; and judging by the amount of blood already soaked through the layers of cloths and the rugs underneath, it was impossible for Sam to do anything else at that point.
He immediately took out the phone from his pockets and started dialling but the phone in his hand was swatted and sent crashing on the wall before the screen cracks on the floor.
"What are you trying to do?! Save my boy first! Open up her stomach or something!"
"How long have she been like this? You're going to lose both of them if they didn't get to the hospital in time. Let's call the hospital first, okay?" Sam was sitting with his knees on the floor, he pressed the woman's stomach and felt that it was rigid and contracted, typical of a miscarriage. He knew he couldn't do anything to stop the highly probable internal bleeding and even if he could, the risk of infections would be too high even in the cleanest house, let alone in the one he was currently in.
"I knew it! You're also one of the money hungry capitalists trying to suck our pocket dry by forcing us to go to that filthy place! Leave!" The man he believed to be at least more than ten years older than him, roughly pushed his shoulders trying to make Sam leave. Sam on the other hand, easily held onto the man's hand and blocked the man's attempt while trying to still reason with him.
"Sir, please. Your wife and your baby need urgent attention. We will think of the bill later, okay? Surely, we will help--"
"Fuck you! Go away! You are planning to steal my boy and money! Go away!" Worrying over the woman's eyes that got dimmer by the seconds, Sam loosened his grip on the man only to be pushed to his back, his head hitting the wall with a loud thud.
Sam groaned out of pain and rubbed his head at the sudden attack. He closed his eyes for a few seconds and opened them up to see a Rambo knife waved carelessly in front of his face, the man hunching in front of him threatened, "Leave before I gut you!"
"Zi Hong!"
Sam's eyes moved towards the door, "Yu, stand back! It's okay."
"Great, you can take your boyfriend home." The man used his knife to point at Sam.
With his eyes wide, red and almost teary, Yu pleaded, "Zi Hong.. Let's just go.. Please.."
It's not that Sam intentionally wanted to put himself in harm. He could let the family settle their own problem but seeing that the older man was not in his right mind, and the fact that he was holding a knife in his hand after instructing Sam to open up his wife's stomach, Sam knew he couldn't just leave. "Sir, they really need the hospital. They have specialists there, for both your wife and son. They have a greater chance there. Let's.."
"You—"
"Your son is dead, I'm pretty sure." The voice was loud, almost said hastily to grab the man's attention. Sam called Yu but he was ignored.
"What the hell?"
"With that much blood, I'm surprised she's still not dead." Yu added, the expression on his face was something different, something Sam wish to never see again.
"Yu, shut up!" Sam shouted as he stood up. The older man was standing in between both of them with his back on Sam. The knife was pointed towards Yu this time. He was about to lunge forward but Yu sounded again, louder this time.
"Why are you wasting air on this piece of garbage Zi Hong? I'm sure his wife would rather be dead than to stay with this good for nothing. Son? Would your son even one a father like you? You piece of-"
It happened in a blink of an eye, the next time Sam saw it, the two of them were already on the floor struggling, "Yu!"
