It was a quarter past 11 that night. It was cold and windy but Yu had fire and fury in equal measure. From behind one of the shipment containers in the capacious Keelung Port, Yu listened to the conversation between the two men within his eye sights. With a gun Evan had forced him to take in his suit and a dagger in his other hand, Yu was waiting for the right time, praying that the young CEO wouldn't ruin their plan.
"Why the hell do you want me here? Are you trying something funny?" Machida rebuked in his long dark brown coat and a cigarette in between his fingers.
"No. No. There's a problem with one of your shipment. One of them died."
One of them died? Yu was troubled at the new information, annoyed that Mr. Wang left out that bit of information. The fact that the containers may contain more than just drugs had definitely scrapped Yu's plan of ambush to destroy all the containers in an explosion. He waved his hand over his neck signalling Evan to look for the people Machida had planned to smuggle and thought that he might have to resort to an old-fashioned face-off.
"Did you really call me for this stupid reason?" Machida took Mr. Wang's collar in his hand, the smoke from the cigarette almost stuffed up Mr. Wang's nose.
"I.. I wasn't sure of what to do. What if the rest of them die too?" Mr. Wang stuttered with his shifty eyes.
Yu massaged his forehead thinking that the young man would get himself killed if this continued.
"Tck. Tck. Tck. You should know better than to lie to me. Whom did you tell on me to? The police?" Machida sniggered as he pushed Mr. Wang down on the tarred dock. One of his three men behind him pointed a gun at the now hurriedly kneeling guy.
"Please, please. I promise you I didn't tell anyone. You're misunderstanding." Mr. Wang begged for his life, his palms rubbing aggressively.
Machida held up his palm, instructing his man to halt. "I guess it's not the police then. Then it must be my favourite man."
Machida let out a possessed laughter that deepened the crease in Yu's face.
"YUSUKE. OUT OR I KILL THIS MAN." Machida roared in his native tongue. He spun his body around, looking for the man he knew was looking for him all this while. He knew having the doctor killed was a bad idea but it gave him a feeling of contentment, a form of indemnification from the man who killed the love of his life. For him, they were very much tragically alike but Yu had something that he didn't care to have.
Boundless compassion.
"TICK. TOCK. TICK. TOCK."
"Aargh!" Mr. Wang was rolling on the road, holding on to his left hand that had just been shot by Machida's man.
"What are you rushing for? It's not like you have anyone waiting for you at home." Yu treaded out of his hiding place with both his hands in his pocket. He ignored the worry-filled voices from his earpiece. "I don't know what you just said Yu but can't we just fucking stick to the plan?!"
"Well, aren't you just a peach. You couldn't even bear to see this snake dead." Machida sneered at the approaching man. He signalled his men to back away, ignoring the squirming man near him.
"Don't sound so happy, I might think you like me." Yu stopped his track and plastered a smile on his face.
It was that laugh again. Has this man gone crazy? Yu scrunched up his face at the surely made up evil laugh while gesturing Mr. Wang to come close to him.
"Like you?? Like you!? HAHAHA. True. True. Of course I like you. You gave me a cause to kill Oyabun, you helped me realize that without taking things into my own account, I would never be where I am today."
"Where? In the middle of a shipping dock, lonely and miserable?" Yu snided. He looked for a place for Mr. Wang to hide in case chaos ensues. He decided the containers 8 feet beside him would be best.
"Miserable? Yes. But, lonely? I have you here now don't I? How lonely could I be?"
"Just cut the crap Machida. Let Mr. Wang go. Send your men away and I'll send mine away too. Surely you know I'm not alone right." Seeing that Machida had not stepped forward to approach him, Yu knew he must have walked into a trap. He just hoped his men hiding around the place would notice that too.
"Right. Right. Of course. You have always been prepared. Just like when you killed Eiji."
Lights flickered in Yu's eyes as he was reminded of his brawl with Machida almost a year ago. It was a mistake in a messy situation. It happened in a breath, in a blink of an eye. Eiji jumped in between his and Machida's fight, getting him stabbed to death instead. Out of Eiji's wish, Yu let the gravely injured Machida go. And that was a mistake. He thought Machida would stop.
"You killed Oyabun! You killed everyone, anyone that won't bow to you. Do you think there won't be any retribution?"
"Well I still have you, don't I? And about that stupid doctor, I'm pretty sure you killed him yourself."
"You.."
"Right? He was a moron. He actually fell in love with you. He actually let himself be killed out of fear of being your weakness. He actually-"
"Stop!"
"Well, he's actually right though. Things would be so different now if he was still alive. I should've used him more instead of letting him die in vain. What a waste."
"It's not a waste." Yu wouldn't want to think of it any other way.
"Huh?"
"He knew I'd have no restriction once he's gone and you, you'd get nothing. The files you wanted so much are still safe because he died. So tell me, how was his death in vain? If anything, Eiji's death was in vain. He protected a scum like you. Who belonged only in the deepest hole in hell. It's really is a pity, even in death you won't be reunited with a good people like him. Even in death, he'd be disappointed in you!" It took Yu weeks to understand why Sam did what he did. As much as he wanted the reason to comfort him, it finally returned to the fact that Sam did die because of him, because he wanted to protect him.
Yu rushed behind a container near him as a bullet flew right by his feet. He pushed the limping man who was following him into hiding too. The cover fire from his hiding men helped the two of them escaped unscathed. He sneaked a peek at the space he was standing on a few seconds a go and noticed that Machida was no longer there as well.
"A SNEAK ATTACK MACHIDA? REALLY?!" Yu sounded surprised when in reality, he just wanted Machida to reply to him, to gauge his location. He received no response but Machida couldn't be far.
"I'm not seeing him."
"This side too." Evan and Richard informed in Yu's ear.Yu gestured to Mr. Wang to escape by directing him towards where he came from. He slowly walked with his back close to the large containers which were stacked against and on each other around the port. He lurched along the densely filled port, trying to keep himself out of sight. A minute passed when he heard distant range of shots and bullets hitting the gigantic steel boxes and Evan yelling in his ear, "Boss! Find someplace to hide, let me finish this first!"
Yu switched off his earpiece upon hearing the persisting back and forth shots on the other side. He took out the gun tucked inside his suit pants. Machida must've led his men away on purpose, he assumed. His eyes casted a brief look at the deserted narrow space in within the mounting steel boxes. The dark sky provided little help to his field of vision. The distant shouts and ringing of bullets didn't help him to concentrate either. Five seconds into holding his breath, he heard a scrape over his head. He was about to lift his chin and his gun with it but he was pushed down onto the road with a loud thud.
Yu lost grip of his gun amidst the grapple. The scuffles lasted only until the man on top of him levelled a revolver on his chest.
With a cutting tone through the cold midnight air, Machida snided, "Stop struggling love, it's over."
