- Harry ignores Draco because he's upset -
word count: 1709
Harry laid on his back, words from the day before resonating in his head. It was the first night of 7th year, and he couldn't sleep.
That morning, at platform 9 3/4 , Harry had a run in with Draco's father. He was minding his own business at the station, waiting to see any of his friends so he could board the train. He heard his name called and turned, smiling when he saw Draco lightly jogging towards him. The blonde, his boyfriend of about a year, stopped in front of him, grinning ear to ear. If they hadn't been in public, Harry would have kissed him right there.
"Hey, stranger" Harry greeted. "Long time no see."
"Way too long." Draco agreed, moving to clap Harry on the shoulder.
"Draco!" A sharp voice cut through the air, pulling both boy's attention towards it. Draco's face paled a bit when he turned, as his father stood a few feet away, stone-faced.
"Yes, father?" He replied.
"You forgot your broom." Lucius said, voice cold as ice. Draco walked over to his father to retrieve it, where Lucius grabbed his arm and pulled him closer. "What do you think you're doing being friendly with that Potter? That is not what we stand for as Malfoys, you might as well disgrace our name. I will not tolerate this behavior. Do you understand, Draco?" He hissed. Draco nodded quickly.
"Yes, father." He repeated. Lucius released his clamped grip on Draco's arm and pushed his broomstick into his hands.
"Good. Now have a good school year, I can only hope you'll do well. Try not to disappoint me." This was the man's final goodbye before turning and heading towards the exit of the station. Harry and Draco both stood in frozen silence, watching Draco's father depart. Once he was out of sight yet again, Draco turned slowly to the other boy. There was tension between them now. Draco wished that Harry hadn't had to see that.
"Well... that happened." Draco said in a half-joking tone. "Harry, I'm sorry. He's just like that."
"Don't worry about it, it's alright." Harry lied. "Let's find a seat, yeah?" The two found Ron and Hermione already on board and sat themselves in the same train car. Harry still felt this sinking feeling in his stomach, and played off his non-conversational mood as being tired. Eventually Ron and Hermione just spoke to each other, and figured they'd let Harry rest. Harry was staring out the window blankly and felt Draco's hand on his. He looked up at the blonde, who looked at him with concern.
"Everything okay?" Draco asked quietly. Harry gave a grimace like smile and nodded. He felt slightly guilty, Draco hardly ever acted this gentle with him, so the situation must have taken a toll on them both. The blonde gave his hand a squeeze which Harry returned. He leaned into Draco's side, but his mind was elsewhere.
Several hours later and it still was. He laid awake, Lucius' words ringing in his ears. 'That is not what we stand for as Malfoys, you might as well disgrace our name.' Harry already knew that Draco's father wouldn't approve of them together, but this really solidified this for him. It had then hit him that this might never work out, him and Draco. He didn't want Draco to have to cut ties with his family, just for a stupid boy like himself. Harry didn't want to end things with Draco, he didn't even know if he could bring himself to do so. It's just that Draco would be better off without him. Harry flipped onto his stomach and buried his face in his pillow. He just needed to think.
