DIEDRE'S POV
Damn that child of mine. How ungrateful she had been to catch such a sickness. My family line had been fairly clean for years.
It had skipped a generation. Now I had a worries of my own.
I tightened my furry cardigan around myself as I approached the tall oak doors. I didn't visit this location often since... well... I didn't want to think about it.
I had given up something that I had seen as valuable and he had accepted it. Then, when that valuable asset died, he summoned me once more.
When I met the familiar face sitting in his giant chair that served more as a throne, he grinned at me with a set of white teeth.
"My, my," he said, "even at your age you look delicious."
I wanted to flush at this. And not in a good way. He still gave me the chills deep in my bones.
Suddenly memories of his hand raking up my leg reared its head.
"My dear, you're so kind."
I managed to keep my voice steady.
"Now, to the business at hand," the man went on, "we must discuss the replacement."
I nervously closed my small wallet.
"Yes, of course. That's why I've come; I have a few inquiries for you."
When he beckoned me to continue, I memorized all I needed to say.
"You had me. You had Dorinda. Why do you need this... this... common..."
The man laughed."I've come to understand that you loathe your daughter in law."
I wanted to curse. Fuck. I hated that Kristina, I really did. Though I didn't want her to be under anyone's thumb.
"Have you met her? I can't stand her. She's latched onto my dear grandson like some nasty germ."
He only chuckled, eyeing me in interest.
"Isn't that what you'd done to Hero once you'd given Dorinda to me?"
I backed against the counter surprised at his statement.
"Pardon me?"
The man shrugged.
"I supposed you learned a thing or two from me. Listen. Point blank, I want that girl and I will have her."I blinked, trying to process his words.
"Why do you want her so bad? Something else I wanted to bring up is Hero's disappearance. You wouldn't happen to know anything about that would you?"After a minute of silence, he tilted his head.
"Perhaps, though I didn't send him away if that's what you're getting at. Why are you keeping this girl from me?"
I rolled eyes, clearly affronted.
"What-? No. I'm not. I just don't know why she's so special."
Everything changed so fast. Like he'd never been sitting in the first place, the man's nose was pressed against mine, his expression one of fury.
I was warned to never cross him yet I had.
"Do not question me Diedre," he said through clenched teeth, "I own you just as I had owned your daughter. You're nothing. You hear me? If I decide that I want that fucking cunt, I'll have her. If you don't aid me in this, I will hurt your dear grandson, mark my words."
I gulped understanding him completely. I didn't want to hurt anybody but when the most important thing in my life was threatened...
Oh, Kristina I'm so sorry.
"Name the date and time." I said shakily. "I'll lure her in."
