I wasn't sure what was happening.
The guards had managed to keep me and Josephine apart so, for the time being, it had been quiet. Even from where I sat, I could tell my words hit Jo hard, but I knew someone had to say it.
She needed a wake-up call.
It worried me that the guards weren't doing much but idling by the monitors. Every once in a blue moon I would hear the tell-tale sign of the clicking of a keyboard, but other than that, no one jumped up to make important calls.
Why were they so calm?
Suddenly, a wave of anger hit me.
"Shouldn't you be doing more?" I snapped.
One of the guards that had been picking his teeth with a toothpick like some lazy ass, raised a thick brow.
"Excuse me, little lady?"
For some reason, his endearment pissed me off like nothing else in the world.
"We lost contact of the captain and your team and all you've been doing is sitting on your rump! You said we need to get ahold of the government or some shit! Why aren't you moving? Why aren't they here?"
The guard scoffed, removing his helmet, revealing a mass of blonde hair that reached his shoulders.
I would have been swooning over the fact that he so closely resembled Thor if he hadn't been such a dick.
"Look, little lady. I know you're pregnant and confused, so I'll cut you some slack. You have no idea how this works. Let me break it down for you; We can't call them up like you do with mommy and daddy. It takes time, which is why we're typing out a form. I mean, it doesn't take all of us to get the job done."
I glowered, ignoring his response.
"You could be watching the property of the compound. What if we're in danger because of what's happened? Would have thought you'd had some training in common sense."
Before the guard could respond, the guard put to the duty of watching over us earlier, spoke up.
"Quiet! There's an alert on the other station!"
With a click on his headset, he began responding to whoever was speaking on the other end.
"Hello-? Fuck! Captain!"
At this, we all stood at attention. He was fine.
"Yes! What? So, it was only the explosion? No one died? Okay. Thank you, sir."
I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding. At the same time, Josephine and I looked at each other. I could already see the regret in her eyes.
Everything she'd said had been for nothing. The only thought that ran through my mind was:
If that is how she views Kylie, can she stay in our group?
The guard clicked off his headset.
"Alright guys, we can forget the form. Our team completed the mission. Ms. Benson is in our custody and we have the man and woman in the swat van. They are on their way back to Chico as we speak."
Rose, Brendan, Josephine, and I hooted and hollered in joy as we realized that everything was going to be fine. The guards all backed away and covered their ears amidst this.
Killjoys.
"So we can head home as soon as soon as our men-folk get here?" I asked excitedly.
One of the guards rolled his eyes.
"Yes. Allow us some time to prepare for the necessary precautions."
I nodded. It didn't matter what court proceedings we'd have to attend or how much paperwork we'd have to sign.
We were going to be fine.
I rubbed my stomach as I awaited the inevitable.
