Ezekiel gulped before continuing.
"There was a lot of shit Kylie unearthed. Not only... does he have several minors um... under his belt... but he has connections to brothels. She told him how disgusting he was and made threats. He said things I don't want to repeat."
"E," I snapped without thinking about the nickname I'd given him, "Just tell me what he said!"
The line went silent for a long minute.
"I can't do that- I won't put you through-"
"Fuck that!" I screamed. "I need to know. We both know she's going through worse right now!"
He groaned as if in pain.
"I'll sum it up. Let's just say that he vowed he would do unimaginable things to her and throw away the key."
I gasped. This was damning evidence. If we showed this to the police, there would be no doubt of this Slim character of being arrested, though if we revealed how we got the texts, we might be liable for arrest as well.
I cupped both my hands over my mouth.
"This is so scary, E. What's our first plan of action? I don't care about anything right now except getting her to safety."
"I know," Ezekiel growled, "I'm not too sure. It might take a while to find their location. We're at a dead-end right now. Christ. I miss her."
I allowed a tear to roll down my face.
"Me too. I know we don't know each other well, but I think if we work together we could really be a great team."
"Ditto," E answered gruffly. "Look, Kristina. You seem like a really good person. Do you work? Let me know when you're off and I'll escort you home."
I nearly choked. Was he for real?
"That's not necessary."
He then became more serious, his voice whipping out, making me shrink away in surprise.
"This won't be a negotiation. Anyone that is important to my woman is important to me. This man is after you. You're not going to be running around alone. Got me?"
I was shocked to feel my lip wobble. It wasn't like I was scared of the tone he'd used. I just hadn't expected someone of his stature to be so friendly.
"Yes." I sniffled. "Thank you. I'm off now at the Tiffin Corporation downtown. On East street."
Ezekiel grumbled in response.
"I'll be there shortly. And Kristina?"
I wiped at my wet nose.
"Yeah?"
"Remember that you are important."
Before I could ask why he'd say such a thing, the call ended.
