"From the beginning would be a start." I replied.
Diedre spent another long moment staring at my belly. I didn't know why but it made me uncomfortable. It was almost like she detested the fact that I was carrying a baby.
"Where's my grandson?" She demanded.
I nearly rolled my eyes but refrained. Instead, I opted for a level smile.
"He isn't here. He wished to not see you."
Diedre narrowed her eyes.
"I don't believe that. I'm shocked he didn't try to contact me after finding out that you were unfaithful all along."
Oh, so that's what she thought... oh wow."This is Hero's child. As a matter of fact, this is your grandchild. Is there an issue with my pregnancy? I've watched you glare at my stomach for lord knows how long."
She must have felt safe telling the truth behind the safety of the glass because she went on, in a snarl.
"It makes me sick, looking at that bastard of a child inside you. The thought of him, having been inside you... spreading his seed... was his cock at least satisfying?"
I gasped, taken aback by her lewd comments. Jesus christ. I'd always known her to be innapropriate, but this was out of pocket.
This was her flesh and blood and she was treating him like some ex-lover.
My Hero was more than just a piece of meat.
"You need to wake up and smell the flowers," I said, "we are married and expecting a little girl. Hero is over the moon with this news, whether you want to believe it or not. You, however, are in prison for several counts of kidnapping."
This made her fall silent.
I didn't stop speaking to her.
"What would you have done if you would have been successful in trapping me? I knew what you were up to in the cafe. I'm pregnant."
Her lips twisted nastily.
"Let us just say that I wouldn't have put a stop to anything. My dear, sometimes private prayers are answered."
I shrinked in my seat, unwilling to believe what was coming out of her mouth.
"From the beginning, you said?" She countered. "Well, I shall deliver. Let's see. How about when I met you at the benefit ball? I had a bad feeling about you even then, skulking around where you shouldn't."
I raised an eyebrow.
"That art room? Didn't you say it hadn't been an issue?"
Diedre snorted.
"I was simply catering to the less fortunate. You, my dear, were dirt poor."
I wanted to argue that back then, my so called family had been plenty rich, but it was a waste of time.
"Go on?" I urged, patting my belly.
Once again, Diedre's eyes zeroed in on the motion.
"Yes. Of course. When you finally met up with us at the table, I'd seen the look of recognition on your face, as well as Hero's. He was so adamant on escaping from me. He'd never done that before. Never. Then again, when he fucked you in that hallway I should have known..."
I gasped.
"You saw?"
Diedre laughed.
"Of course I did, you nasty harlot. But I figured it didn't mean a thing. After seeing your fight, I was sure his interest would die."
I grinned.
"Yet, you were wrong."
She shocked me by refraining to glower and clasped her hands together.
"Indeed, I was. All that would have been fine. I could have watched from a distance but... when you managed to get your claws in my daughter..."
I rolled my eyes. She really was laying this on thick.
"She and I didn't get along for awhile."
At this, Diedre slammed her hands on her table, gaining attention from a few guards. She then eased back.
"As far as you could tell she detested you, but I knew better. My failure of a child thought she'd been smart when she caught wind of my relationship with Hero. She sent him away, hoping I'd figure it was because she and her husband could have cared less, but in reality, she was terrified that I'd ruin him, but I was sneaky like that."
She paused for dramatic effect, then continued.
"From day one, she had his best interests at heart, or so she claimed. Despite what I tried to ingrain in her head from a young age, I knew she'd managed to seperate herself from all that. She was a good liar however. I believe she tried to convince herself she hated you or, rather, was acting nasty to keep her son safe from yet another vile woman but in time, she accepted you. Little by little, she defied me with petty remarks then did all she could to protect you two."
My eyes widened.
"Wait... those pictures and her absence from the company?"
Diedre smiled.
"Very good, you're learning. Evengot had eased off her when he realized she'd aged, but when she saw that to get him off my back, I planned to sick him on you... well, let's just say Dorinda kept him entertained for a time."
"But it didn't last forever." I murmured.
Poor, poor Dorinda. My god, she'd done so much, when in reality, I thought she hated me."No. Especially when she became haggard and couldn't move as stealthily, Evengot and I knew it was the perfect opportunity. With her gone, I could be rid of you and get my grandson."
I felt the need to puke.
"How can you speak so lowly of your own flesh and blood?"
Diedre shrugged.
"She would have understood. That's the way of the business industry."
I shook my head doing my best not to cry.
"So, you planned my kidnapping for a long time?"
She nodded.
"Since I realized what you meant to my grandson."
I sat back, unsure of where to go from here. This hadn't been a decision that had been made on a whim.
No. She'd done everything she could to rid of anyone that got in the way of her incestuous relationship.
I sighed, knowing I had one last thing I needed to know.
"What is Evengot's first name. Surely, you have nothing left to lose?"
With a snarl, Diedre replied.
"Jake."
So... as if we didn't need another reason to hate Diedre.
Lmao.
