Luella Jones

"Hello motherfucker!" I sit up quickly, looking around to catch the noise that startled me.

I see my best friend Fiona standing beside my bedroom door, staring at me with a smirk on her lips, knowing she just caused a full on heart attack for me.

I hate when people do that, but it's sometimes funny so I don't get a say in it.

"Damn babe, what time did you sleep yesterday?" She says as I stretch out, rubbing my eyes as I look at the clock beside me, reading 2pm.

She always shows up at a time like this.

"Um, around 11pm" I lie in with a hoarse voice due to the fact I just woke up.

"Yeah, and I'm dating Tom Holland." She says as she chuckles, reading through my lie.

"Yeah fine whatever I didn't sleep." I say quickly as I get up, going to the bathroom in my room to brush the weird smell out of my mouth.

"You know you've got to stop doing that, by the time you're 80, your eye bags will look worse than a crumbled essay stuffed in my bag." She says through the door as I brush my teeth.

Well, it's not like I can control it, Fiona.

She opens the door due to the lack of my respond, staring at me through my mirror. "It's not healthy, I know it's hard babe, but you gotta work on it."

"I am working on it!" I actually respond this time after closing the water. "I just don’t sleep on weekends, remember?"

"Yeah well, weekends or not, you have to fix that sleep schedule of yours." She tries to lecture me, walking behind me as I close my bathroom door heading back to my desk.

I sigh as I look at how I drooled all over my math homework, at least I finished it.

"Have you even eaten?" She asks another question she knows the answer to already. "Come on, my mom made this delicious banana cake you like. She brought it with her when we came here, let's go eat some." I hear her say as I gather all my stuff on the table, stuffing them in my school bag, reminding myself I need to finish that history essay soon.

It's true though, I do like that banana cake.

Fiona and I have been friends since middle school, she's also my neighbour across the street, which makes it even easier to hang out together.

She understands me a lot, I've found quite similarities between her and I for the past few years, except that she's the hot one, and I'm the boring, quiet nerd in the back of the classroom.

She drags me down the stairs to the kitchen, cutting two slices of the cake in a plate for her and I to share.

I go to say something, but she cuts me off saying "I know I know, I'll tell her you were studying of course." She says referring to my mom, not wanting her to know that i was sleeping.

See? She understands me.

I smile at her murmuring a thank you before heading into the living room to say Hi to her mother.

"Hey Mrs. Euston" I wave at her as I sit down on the couch, Fiona sitting on the arm of it next to me, chewing on her piece of cake.

"Hello darling." She acknowledges my arrival, smiling down at me as she sees me eating her food. She absolutely loves it when I taste something she baked. When I was younger, she would make me taste everything she bakes; me being the first one to judge her brownies, cakes, cookies and any form of bread.

I've formed a kind of mother-daughter bond with her over the years, it's kind of beautiful.

She even treats me better than my own mom.

Speaking of my mom, she stares at me across the opposite couch she's sitting on, opening her mouth to say something too "Where were you? I called out your name multiple times and you didn't respond once."

"I was doing my homework while playing some music. I didn't hear you, sorry." I apologize, putting on my innocent face for a moment for her to believe me.

Living in a strict household, you grow up knowing how to perfectly lie to them without them knowing, it's one of my few skills.

She quietly nods as she continues eating her own piece of banana cake.

"So, how's school Luella? Fiona's finding physics quite hard now. What about you? Any hard subjects to encounter?" She asks, trying to make a conversation with me.

I think about it for a moment, I mean, any subject is hard if you don't understand or practice doing it, and I'm the type of person that gets straight A's in anything. "Well, physics is quite hard, yeah. Math also needs a bit more concentrating, but we're all pulling through it." I say, finishing my banana cake and placing the plate on the table in front of me.

"Luella is always getting them good grades, I don’t worry much about her. She knows how to handle herself well in school." My mom joins in on our conversation, making me nod to her words.

It's not like Fiona doesn't get good grades, but she's had her ups and downs this year, and I don’t quite blame her, everything is harder than ever, this year.

I go to stand up, ready to go finish that damn homework I have left. Fiona standing up with me of course, ready to follow.

"Well it was nice chatting with you Mrs. Euston, I'll be heading back to my room to finish some left-over homework" I put on my kindest smile and go to grab some water before leaving to my room. She nods to my words and says a quick "good luck" as I walk into the kitchen.

I walk up to my room with a bottle of water in my left hand, the other being put on my door knob before twisting it and getting in, Fiona following behind.

"You know, if you're gonna do some homework, might as well do mine too." She says behind me as I close the door.

I don't really mind doing hers too since she does mine from time to time if I'm too depressed on days to even bother to study, so of course I'll do it.

I nod to her words moving to sit back on the chair while she slumps down on my unmade bed.

"Also, there's this really cool party Rylee is preparing next week, want to go with me?"

Ugh, parties.

Rylee has been her high-school boyfriend for two years now, he's really just the popular football player, known for his looks and nothing else. He was in Spanish class with her, and they hit it off from the start.

That's the thing about Fiona, she knows exactly how to attract boys, it's in her nature.

"I'll think about it." I say quietly, not wanting to give away an answer yet.

"You'll think about it or you'll ditch me like always?"

You see, I'm not a huge party animal, sometimes I go there for nothing but the alcohol, and other days I just stay in my room, not bothering to see people dance and make out in the same area as me.

"I said I'll think about it."
