Nick heard the noise but only processed the fight when he felt Molly fall into his side. A lean guy began approaching them, but Nick put his arm out, keeping him from coming closer.

The guy's face was red. "Man, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to."

"What the h*ll's going on here?" Charlie called out as he saw how it happened. "Bennett, you f*ckin hit a girl."

"Ford dodged the punch." The guy brought his hand to the back of his neck and turned back to Molly. "I'm really sorry."

"Get out of here," Charlie said, pissed. "Both of you."

While the commotion continued, Nick removed Molly's hand from her face.

"That hurt," she said with a shaky voice and tears flooding her eyes.

"I bet. But you took it well."

"You're probably teasing me; I'm not sure," she looked at his concentrated eyes examining the side of her face, "but it's working."

"Here." Charlie came from the side with a bag of ice in his hand.

"Thanks," Nick and Molly answered simultaneously.

Nick instinctively took the bag and put it over the area. She half-smiled and put her hand on the bag as well. "I got it," she said softly.

"Why don't you sit down, Mol?" Charlie asked.

"I think it's time for me to head home. Happy birthday," she told him, looking through one eye.

"You sure you don't want to sit for a minute?" Nick asked her quietly.

"I'm fine; I just want to head home."

His hand lightly rested on her back. "Alright, let's go."

They got out of the house and Molly began sniffling. Nick looked at her and realized she was crying.

"Sh*t," she said.

His eyes became wider in the darkness, and he came to a stop. "You okay, Molly?"

"Yeah, I just wasn't going to look like a wuss and cry in front of everyone." She sniffled again. "I guess I didn't take it well after all."

Nick's arm hugged her waist. "Are you kidding? I don't know about girls, but when a guy gets hit and goes off to the bathroom to look at their new tough look, they're actually going to cry."

She laughed despite her tears.

"I'm serious. You took it like an average guy would."

"So, you're saying, if you got this punch, you would go to the bathroom and cry?"

"I said nothing about me being an average guy."

She laughed again. "You're an idiot."

He gave her a funny look as they continued down the path. "You know what it means when you call a guy an idiot?"

She took the bait. "What does it mean?"

"You seriously don't know, Molsie?"

"You're just messing with me," she stated.

"No, I'm serious. Do you go around telling guys that they're idiots?" he asked her with a sober tone.

She felt the half of her face that wasn't being covered with ice getting hot. "What do you mean? What does it mean?"

"Love, the words need to come out of your mouth, not mine. It would just be weird otherwise."

"Nick, stop. You're freaking me out. Are you just messing with me?"
