Standing by Jean's side, we watch the interrogation of Floch and three other new recruits. Hanji was able to find someone to look after Marco for me so I could resume Survey Corps duties. It was nice to be back and working again.
It is so strange to see Hanji as the commander now but I don't doubt for a second she will do a great job. She was taught by the best.
I suck in a deep breath, capturing the attention of Jean. He gives me a side glance and places his hand on my shoulder as we continue to listen through the trial.
Floch's eyes move over to me. I remember when he first joined the Survey Corps. He was cocky then and I can see after all of these years nothing has changed.
"You're not going to detain her?" He snaps. "She was living in Marley for four years. They might have converted her and you have welcomed her back with open arms."
Jean tenses up and he narrows his eyes at the guy. "You better watch yourself." He warns.
Hanji keeps her attention focused on Floch and the others. "(y/n) is one of our best soldiers and I have spoken to Zeke about her. He reassured us that she remained hard-headed and focused on returning to us." She says. "This trial is not about her but about what you four have done. Lives were lost due to your ignorance. You will be detained for your disobedience."
Floch glares at me and shakes his head as they are taken away. Everyone slowly starts to file out of the room. Jean tugs on my arm for me to follow.
"I want to speak with Hanji alone for a moment. I won't be long." I say.
He nods and leaves with Connie. Once everyone has gone and the door is shut, I approach Hanji. She looks at me surprised.
"I haven't had a chance to speak with you properly since I got back," I say.
"We've both been busy, it's understandable."
There is silence between us before we suddenly embrace. She grips onto my jacket tightly.
"It's good to finally have you back." She pulls back. "You've grown so much."
I laugh. "Good, my motivation was to be taller than Levi."
"Then you've achieved that." She drops her hands away and digs in her pocket for something. "I've got something that you might like."
"A present? For me?" I joke.
She pulls out a Survey Corps crest. "I pulled this from his jacket after he passed away. Even though you weren't with us when he died, I thought you might like to have it."
I gently take it from her. "You kept it all this time?"
"I knew one day you would come back to us. We are your family after all."
"Thank you, this means a lot."
She clears her throat and looks away from me. "You're welcome. Also, when you have a moment. Go and see Levi. I think he took losing you the worst even more than Jean."
"It can't have been easy since he lost Erwin and me that day."
"He never said anything but I could see how it took its toll on him. I should get going, there is a lot for me to do."
"Understandable. Is Levi still out with Zeke?" I ask, placing Erwin's Survey Corps crest in my jacket pocket.
"Yes. If you do go out there, please be careful."
"Yes, Commander."
A smile cracks her face before she leaves the room.
