"I'm sorry but why did we all need to be here?" Tristan asked. We were all meeting in the catwalks. Evan had gotten us all together, Lilith, Tristan, Kieran, Damion, even Nathaniel.
"We need to start preparing for our journey back to The Facility." Evan looked at all of us. "We need to push aside our problems if we're actually going to do this-"
"I have a question." Nathaniel cut him off. "Why are they here?" He pointed to Kieran and Tristan.
"We're helping!" Kieran said excitedly.
"There's nothing exciting about visiting a torture chamber." Nathaniel spat back.
"Considering we're being lead by someone who helped with the torturing," Damion said through gritted teeth, "I think we can give them a pass."
"Can we please just focus on getting ready to go back? I know everyone in here is going through something, but we all said that we would go and help everyone else still in there and deal with the people who did all those horrible things to us!" I exclaimed, standing up. Everyone stared at me.
"You can deal with one of them right now." Damion cocked his head towards Evan. Tristan glared at him.
"Watch yourself. That's my brother." Tristan glared at Kieran. "You're just going to let him talk about my brother like that?"
For some odd reason, I felt like looking at Nathaniel. He was smiling, watching the whole thing unfold. Almost like...he wanted it to happen.
I didn't notice it at the time, but it seemed like every time Nathaniel was in the room, everyone got extremely argumentative with each other. If I had no clue about Prodigals, I would have seen it as some kind of weird coincidence. Now, I have a feeling that in a way, he was causing it.
The argument stopped when the sound of light bursting caused us all to jump.
"I think we should work on our...abilities as well." Lilith quietly said.
"Alright, here's what we're going to do. Yvonne, Lilith, and Damion, you three are going to work on...you know. That stuff. Tristan and Kieran, I'm going to teach you guys how to use weapons and fight. Nathaniel, you're welcome to join us. Are we all good with these plans, or do we want to argue again?" Evan meant business.
We all mumbled an agreement and got ready to leave. As we started walking out, I felt someone pull me back.
"Yvonne, how are you feeling?" Evan asked.
"Fine?" I scratched my arm, nervous. It had been a while since Evan and I talked privately.
"I want you to know that whatever you're going through, you can talk to me." He put his hand on my shoulder. "I really care about you, and I don't want you to think I'm not worried about you even if I'm going through something as well."
"I'm fine, Evan. Don't-" He pulled me into a tight hug. I couldn't remember the last time I had a really good hug, so I really appreciated it. It made me feel so...safe.
"I'm serious, Yvonne. You are my best friend."
I wanted to say it back, but I was still struggling thinking of all the things that had been happening. I really didn't know who my friends were.
When I didn't answer, he pulled away, and for a moment he looked hurt. "I'm just going to...uh...go." He turned around and left, leaving me alone in the catwalks. I watched him leave, not sure what to do. I heard the sound of a class coming into the theater, and quickly made my way out as well.
