Now that everyone is sleeping, I start wandering around. First, I walk through the bar, looking at the pictures on the wall. I saw them earlier, but from far away. Now I can recognize the faces. Most photos were taken here in the bar. After a while, I spot a picture with Dean on it, but much younger than he is now. One of his arms is laid around Jo. In front of him sits Bobby in a wheelchair. I wonder what on earth happened, that he needed a wheelchair. Then there is Ellen and two other men that I don't know. Maybe I can ask the others who they are. No one in this picture is laughing, the atmosphere in the photo is dreary and sad. I sigh, leaving the image behind, and approach the door to the outside.
The air comes coldly towards me, and I breathe in deeply. I pass Dean's car and make my way to the trees that surround the building.
Stepping between them, the air is getting colder, and the light fades almost completely. My eyes need a second, but then I can see through the dark shadows. It's virtually silent, only a slight rustling now and then is to hear. I like that this world isn't completely silent, not even at night. I can feel the animals of the night sneak around through the greenery on the ground.
I step deeper between the trees, listening to the weak wind that rushes through the treetops above me. The air gives me goosebumps when I hear a cracking noise behind me. I freeze in my movement because a noise like that could only come from a taller creature. Deep in my brain, I know, here in heaven, there is nothing evil, but I'm not used to that many noises around me.
I turn slowly, holding my breath, anxious about what I will see. Again I can feel my heart beating faster than before. I kind of get used to that feeling by now, it often happened in the last 24 hours after I met Dean. Thinking about it, it even beats faster when I look at him. I shove the thought away, getting aware of my situation again. Still not moving fast around, in the corner of my eye, there comes something tall, but it isn't moving. I can spot it staring at me like I'm staring at it too. I don't know exactly what it is, but it's an animal, a big one, but it doesn't look dangerous. I can see his nostrils move up and down slightly like it's trying to smell me. His ears are up straight, moving from left to right. Automatically I raise my palm like I want to touch it. The animal doesn't flinch with my motion, so I take a step forward and another one until my fingertips feel the fur. It's warm and soft but hard at the same time. Slowly my fingers drive along the muscular neck till I reach the ears.
Whispering, I say: "And how are you? What are you doing here?" Still petting it in my head, I see what kind of animal it is. "You are a deer. You are beautiful." As an answer, I get a little snort as the deer agrees. "I wish I could learn more about the earth, you know? When Creatures like you live there, it must be the most beautiful place ever."
Suddenly there is a crack to our left, and the deer moves quickly away, vanishing between the trees.
"Oh." I let out, disappointed that the beautiful moment is over. I look in the direction the deer went, but it's not to see any more. Then the cracking noise is back, and this time I turn around fast, hoping the deer is back. But all I can recognize is an outline of a human, but it's too dark to detect who it is entirely.
"Hello?" I ask quietly into the dark.
The shadow moves towards me, and I take a step back before I can hear Dean's voice: "What do you think you are doing here?"
"Dean? I thought you were sleeping." I answer and now move forward.
"Couldn't" is his short answer before he asks me again: "what do you do here in the middle of the night?"
"I just wanted to..." but I can not finish my sentence.
"You think a dark forest during the night is a nice idea to examine? With monsters inside?" his arms are crossed over his chest while he stares me down.
"Dean? Have you forgotten where you are? There are no monsters in heaven. They are all in purgatory."
Dean's arms immediately fall, and his before stern facial expressions soften, and it starts to dawn him. He wipes his face with palms before driving through his hair.
"Why are you even awake? I thought humans sleep through the night."
"Normal people, yes, me not so much." Dean answers, "I just need a few hours."
I nod and ask further:" And what do you do here then?"
"You were gone and..." but he can't finish his sentence. The ground to our feet starts to shake suddenly so much, and we look at each other. The motion of the shake is so hard, we can hardly stand on our feet and the trees and ground making noises so loud, Dean has to shout: " What are you doing?"
"Me...?" I shout back while I start to stumble because of the moving surface. "Why would I do that?" and I hold myself up to a tree next to me.
"What is happening?" Dean shouts again.
The wind starts to blow in a way I never experienced before. The noise is hard to bear.
Dean now starts to grab a tree too and screams: "Stop it!"
"I can't!" I yell back.
Suddenly, I can hear a voice through the storm. I look around, but there is no one to see.
"Do you hear that too?" I yell at Dean, but all I can see is his bowed head shaking.
It's a woman's voice, but I can't understand what she is saying exactly. All I can hear is Dean's name.
The storm is getting stronger and stronger, and my palms start to slip from the trunk, and with a push of the air, I stumble.
Dean grabs me at my upper arm, trying to hold me. My fingers find his forearm and claw it tightly.
I look at him: "I think someone is calling for you. A woman."
While trying to hold me against the storm, Dean yells: "A woman?"
"Yes, she is calling your name and other things I can't understand. It's too loud."
Dean starts to look around while I still try to fight against the storm and stand on my feet. Then all of a sudden, I feel Dean's other palm on my arm. I look at him, then down to our feet, which are sliding through the mud. It seems like he doesn't care, and with a hard move , Dean tosses me to his left. I fall to the ground, but the wind isn't that strong anymore. I recognize a toppled tree in my back, which holds the wind a little bit.
Out of breath, I press myself into the wood, watching out for Dean, who isn't there where he was before. I watch between the trees, but he is nowhere to see.
"Dean?" I shout as loud as I can and hear him rumble, but I can't constitute where he is. Surprisingly something grabs my ankle, and I let out a scream in fear before I see it's Dean's hand. I bend forward, clutching his hand with both of mine, and pull him higher until he leans against the tree too.
He is breathing heavily too, his clothes and face are dirty.
"Are you...are you ok?" he asks between two breaths.
I nod: "You?"
"Could have been better... And worse."
"Thank you for saving me."
"What kind of angel are you again? The ones I know wouldn't even flinch with something like that." He waves his pointing finger around.
"It caught me off guard." I only side-eye him, and I'm a little embarrassed. Dean imagines something else from an angel, not someone like me.
"Ok, " he goes on, "we need to figure out what is happening here and how we get away."
"But, can't you hear the voice?" I ask him.
He shakes his head: "No. We need to get back to the car. Thank God, the wind comes from this side." with his thumb, he points behind us. "And we need to get there." he points in the other direction. "You think you can make it?"
I gulp but nod. I'm an angel, I think to myself, I'm stronger than that. Keep it together, Evangeline.
Slowly I move myself to my knees, palms flat on the ground. You can do it; I give myself a pep talk.
Step by step, I come to my feet, standing tall, and the storm doesn't seem to bother me anymore. I can feel my hair flying around my head. I turn to the direction, the wind is coming from and raise a hand, with a sign to stop. I focus on the thought, the wind needs to stop, and really, the storm flattens down.
Still one palm high, I offer the other towards Dean, who still lays on the ground. When I don't feel his hand in mine, I look down, just to see him staring at me. When he finds his words again, he says: "Yes, that's what I'm talking about."
He stands up without my help and asks: "How long can you hold it?"
"Not sure, but I hope as long as we need to get away."
"Then hurry!" and now he grabs my hand, pulling me with him, making our way outside of the trees.
Arriving at Dean's car, he opens the door for me, and when I take a seat, he makes his way over to the driver's side. Dean starts the engine and takes a look in the small mirror: "It's coming again."
I turn around and see the trees start to shake again, and I even spot very dark clouds above them.
"You should drive, " I say, " something is coming, and I don't think I can stop it this time. It's too strong!"
Without any more words, Dean starts to move the car, and in no time, he drives so fast, but not fast enough.
The dark clouds catch up with us until they overcome us. Now in front of the car, the clouds seem to roll down and now accommodate us. Wrapped in darkness, I still feel the car moving and hear Dean rumbling deep.
And suddenly the engine stops, it's quiet, too quiet, and I feel the car falling. The clouds around us move up while we move down. Then I feel a harsh crash, and everything around me went dark.
