Chapter 22: Confidentiality
It took me approximately twenty five minutes to finally realize the stupidity I was doing. Did I care, though? No! Because, stupid or not, this was our ticket to the next clue.
Sitting in the small balcony outside the suite, I realized that things were a bit harder than I thought they'd be. So let me explain to you exactly how I ended up here, in the verge of freezing to death.
So it all started with the crazy idea of looking for answers from somebody who had them. I know it doesn't sound crazy but logical, and that's probably because you don't know who we're talking about here.
To be honest, I was feeling grateful that Vice-Principal Vincent's case was still opened. They worked on it every single day and I had become used to seeing officers around the school. With Lorena's case, however, the police wasn't harassing our school. They mainly focused on Lorena, waiting for her to wake up and talk. Two days have passed by now, and she still lies in the hospital bed. Motionless, Mr. Rochester would say. She's motionless and broken. But as I was saying, since Vincent's case is still being handled, Seth had to come this week. Apparently, due to Lorena's case, the police was looking for any common factor between the cases.
Seth was in town and as soon as I heard this, I didn't even blink to miss out on it.
"Are you sure you want to go by yourself?" Jerome asked me for what felt like the hundredth time.
For starters, I would like to be congratulated, because I wasn't going to sneak out of the house. I told them that I wanted to visit my- and I almost choked while saying it- uncle Seth. They said it was okay with them as long as I was back by nine in the afternoon, which was fine by me. It's not like if I was going to waste my Friday night talking to that douche bag. However, I did need enough time to figure out how to sneak into his hotel room, but I would have enough time for that once I'm in the cab.
"It's okay. I've got this," I said once again that day. I was putting my coat on as Bryan and Jerome watched terrified from the corner.
"You could always use an extra hand," Bryan suggested.
I gave him an apologetic smile while shaking my head, denying his request.
My roommates all watched from Fanny's bed. They all looked unsure. It was as if they were taking in the image of my presence because it was the last time they were going to see it. But what I was about to do didn't take that much of a risk. At least, I thought it didn't.
"I'm scared, Kate," Grace said, her fragile voice being remarkable. Everyone stared at her, as if waiting to see what she was going to do next. She didn't look at anyone else, though. Gracie just stared at me. Her dark brown eyes had met mine and they looked like if they weren't going anywhere for a while. "This guy is unpredictable. We still don't know who Freddie Heart is! He could be anyone and anywhere." I didn't say anything, because, for the first time that night, I was actually getting cold feet. She was right. I hated to admit it, but the girl knew what she was talking about. Silence filled up the room as Grace and I exchanged glares. As if she couldn't take the silence anymore, she said in a hushed tone, "He knows our steps a bit too well."
Her words entered through one ear, and I wished they would have left through the other. But they stayed there, stuck in my head in replay.
"It's okay, guys." They all looked at me, looking more concerned than they did last time. "The taxi will drop me off in front of the hotel and I will sneak into the room. It'll be okay." I tried holding it back, but it was almost inedible as they stared at me to add, "Right?"
They didn't look convinced as they nodded their heads.
While I was riding in the back of a taxi, a fact that I hadn't actually analyzed before dawned on me. I've been in Washington for almost four months now and I still hadn't actually seen it. I had to admit that I liked the scenery. It didn't beat that welcoming spirit that Oregon would always give me, but it was something.
