Chapter 14: Explaining To Do
I’ve never been a big fan of hospitals. They are creepy as hell. Usually, hallways are dimmed and all you see are people that can sometimes resemble zombies, due to their lack of sleep to take care of a friend or relative. It’s the perfect place for a scary movie. Besides, something about the high level of A/C makes me feel so uncomfortable. Maybe it is the fact that its coldness makes me feel like I am locked inside this huge fridge! Let’s sum up the fact that I’ve never been a big fan of Dylan. His cockiness sickens me and so does his presence. I know I have said it before and I will keep on saying it: he’s the reason for my hate. Baring his presence is probably one of the hardest things I’ve had to do- that is, excluding everything that happened last summer and excluding Seth. Yet here I was, trying to create some friction with my hand waiting to be told how Dylan is doing.
Mr. and Mrs. Avenue were nowhere to be seen yet. It actually pissed me of; their negligence. They lost their youngest son and they might be about to lose their other son, but they are missing. To describe how angry I was at that moment would be a challenge.
I sat beside Tyler as Jerome took the freedom to talk with Josh. It turns out that my brother is more of an idiot than what I thought. He actually asked which one the guys was Jerome, without even imagining I was out with him. Jerome took the freedom to start a conversation with my brother while Tyler glared at them. It was only the four of us there, staring at each other. Where my brother sat was beside Jerome, on the chairs across from Tyler and me. Part of me felt lucky I was facing Josh and not Jerome, but the other part wanted to jump and tackle the goofball.
Now, what on Earth is this mentioned idiot doing here? Apparently, Dylan and he are pretty close. Not best friends, but they are close friends. Yes, I was conscious about it. No, I did not know they hadn’t lost contact once Dylan left this territory.
I felt entirely guilty for this scenario. And I am not talking about the awkward tension in the air, but about the horrible situation I put Dylan in. Is it really my fault? Did I get him into all of this?
“Avenue family?”
The doctor’s voice snapped me out of the guilt and brought my attention back to the case.
“His parents aren’t here yet, but we came here with him.”, my brother explained.
“Oh, well, I just wanted to say that the patient is doing just fine.”, the doctor said sheepishly, causing me to sigh in relief. “But before anyone comes to see him, he’s been asking for one person.”
We all looked at each other, thinking that maybe he was asking for Josh. But then I wondered…Who wakes up from fainting thinking about my brother? I mean, the guy must have hit his head hard.
“He’s been repeating the name Katherine over and over again.”, he explained.
I widened my eyes. Maybe they were all wondering why was he asking for me, but I had the feeling that I knew why…and I was scared as hell.
“I-I…”
“Let’s go.”, the doctor said, motioning me to follow him. I swallowed the lump that had formed in my throat; the reason why I stuttered so much.
We started towards the hallways as I imagined the worst of the possibilities, wondering how bad things had gotten. But as the doctor pressed the button for the elevator, I couldn’t help but notice his name tag.
“Excuse me, but by any chance…”, I began, earning his attention. “Have you ever worked in Florida? Like, I don’t know, maybe working in any case for psychology?”
“I am certified to work in Medicine, not in Psychology.”, he said in an oh-so-obvious tone, like if it was the most obvious thing ever.
“Sorry for the confusion, Dr. Houston.” , I apologized as we entered the elevator.
