Chapter 11: Being Home
So the week of the break while they investigate in our school just began. I was already on my way home. I did pretty well on all my tests, taking in the fact that half my brain was focused on my meet-up with mystery guy.
The same day you arrive, come to me. We will meet at your old school at 10:00 p.m.
I constantly repeated this message in my head, trying my best not to forget his instructions. But on the bright side, I am kind of a smart girl- which is why I managed to ace my tests. The only class I had a bit of difficulty with was Biology because they dissected a rat and I made sure to not be there. For my great luck, there was a question on the test about the dissection- a question that was worth like twenty points. At least Harold and stalker dude weren't texting me this week. They were giving me my space to study. Ain't that nice. Please note my sarcasm.
"So, what do you think of the school?" Josh asked.
"It is pretty cool," I simply replied. Yup, the weird-o of my brother was taking me back home. "So, have you heard anything about Harold's death?"
Josh looked at me dumbfounded by my question. You can't blame him. You would expect me to be all depressed and stuff, but if only they knew what I knew.
"Umm...well, I am shocked that you ask. I thought you didn't want to talk about that."
"What would make you think that?" I asked coldly.
"Err...forget it. I just...Yeah, I have heard rumors in school that you can still hear his grunts in the abandoned house. You know, the one we were forced to leave," he said. I widened my eyes and quickly sat straight up in the car's seat. "Wow, you seem surprised about that! But don't worry, those are only lies."
Okay, this might sound stupid and impossible to him, but it sounds helpful to me. What about if Harold is there?
"Yeah...right," I said in a careless tone.
"You're not scared...right?" he asked surprised. I knew why he acted like that. After what happened to me last summer, what else could scare me?
"Oh, of course not! Why would I ever be scared about that? No way!" I scoffed and started chuckling nervously.
"Yeah, I thought so," he said with a roll of eyes and stopping at a red light. I quickly pulled my phone out and texted Jerome.
Me: What about if I told you that there are hopes that Harold is still in my abandoned house?
Jerome: I'd say...what are we waiting for? Just tell me and I'll be there!
Me: Are you sure about this?
Jerome: I promised I wouldn't leave your side and that I was going to help you through. Yes, Katherine, I am sure about this. Just set a date, time, and place.
I was actually a bit awed by that last text. Does he really dare to go to that freaking house? Because that used to be my house, and I am scared of going there myself. Whatever, we're already in this, so there's no turning back.
"Who's Jerome?" my brother's voice made me snap out of my awing moment.
"How much of that did you read?" I quickly panicked. I mean, the last thing I need is to be protecting a 19-year-old who is living back here.
"Chillax, Katie. I only read the last message," he laughed. "So spill the beans! Who on Earth is Jerome?"
"Oh...he's just a friend...nothing else."
He's not exactly the guy I am thinking about.
"Sure. They all start being just friends," he laughed. "Tell you what. Tell him how you feel. He seems to care a lot about you," Josh added. I couldn't believe he was actually bringing up the topic of Jerome.
