Chapter 9: Be Free, Kate
I looked at the guys and then at the woods. What was really stopping me? Shouldn't I be running away in this same instant. I mean, anyone in their right mind would have. Oh God...
"Katherine!" Tyler yelled eagerly, trying to snap me out of my thoughts. "What's wrong?"
"Tyler, just pretend you didn't see anything...please," I begged. His eyes quickly reflected frustration. He shook his head and let out a sarcastic chuckle.
"Time to face the truth, huh? You can't seem to trust me," he said. It hurt to hear those words. I wanted to trust him. Something in him just seems to pull me back every time. But I couldn't. I don't want him hurt. I can't have him hurt.
"I am so sorry..."
"Know what, Kate?" he interrupted me. "Go! Leave if you want to! That's what you want, then go ahead! Who am I to stop you?"
A small pain started forming in my chest. Did he really mean that?
"But remember on thing..." he carried on. "I will be here, waiting for you to come back. I'll be missing you, sure, but I have to let you do what you want. Be free, Kate."
"Tyler, please hear me out," I tried, but his silhouette slowly escaped. As he was walking away, he turned his head, showing me his red eyes. But he didn't come back. He left me there with Jerome, letting me go.
"He seems so sensitive," Jerome said, a hint of confusion in his voice.
"So I'm not crazy?" I scoffed. Jerome smiled before walking over to me.
He took my bag and put it on. Grinning, he gave a step closer to me.
"You have two options. Either you stay...or I go with you."
"Jerome, that is sweet of you, but I have to look for answers..."
"And we will be doing that together," he interrupted me in mid-sentence. "Kate, we're already in this. I won't let you do it alone."
I couldn't help that smile that formed on my lips. He really did care for me, and that was enough to keep me going.
I didn't want him getting hurt. Maybe this was just a rush. Maybe this wasn't even the solution. So the decision I took must have been the right one.
"I'll stay," I said as he smiled.
"Don't you go sneaking around like that again, got it?" he said, his voice being firm.
"Fine, but if something happens I will take full responsibility because this is all my fault," I said with my voice softly cracking. He shook his head and pulled me in a reassuring hug.
"I promise nothing bad will happen," he whispered softly in my ear.
Once he managed to calm me down, we decided to head our way back to the rooms. As usual, we headed to my room. There were Claire and Fanny giggling about something in Fanny's laptop.
"Hey girls," I said dropping the bag I had.
"Hey, we're officially in the game," Fanny said standing up and handing me her phone. Their giggles had faded now. The tone she used to tell me this was just so...filled with disappointment. I watched the message written on her screen and stared at it in shock.
So isn't it sweet. You two want to join as well? Too bad I have no way to communicate with Claire, but I know you two will never leave each other. And it looks to me you want to protect little Kate. Good luck with that, honey buns. ;) Love, us.
