Chapter 30: Pretty Clumsy

"Katherine," I heard an unfamiliar voice whisper in my ear. "Ms. Solomon, I need you to wake-up now." My eyes slowly blinked open, and I saw a dark man with small squared glasses looking straight at me. The room was just how I remembered it. The people were not.

I sat up to take a better look. Mom and Sophie weren't here. It was my sister and my brother with my father. I looked to my right, hoping to see them, but no, they weren't there.

"Wh-where are Mom and Sophie?" I asked, my voice still as raspy as I remembered it.

"They are outside talking with one of your friends from the academy," Dad replied. I got a little nervous as I wondered which friend, but I shook it off because there was a bigger question inside my head.

"Is it true?" They all exchanged confused glares and concerned expressions. "About Harold."

"That he's..." Kacey trailed off since my sister was shooting him a glare. She cleared her throat and stood up a bit straighter. "Sorry."

Wait...I was so confused. Just a moment ago my mother and Sophie were here giving me thrilling news. Harold was alive and all of this was not for nothing. Harold was seen and they were closer to find him. It. All. Made. Sense. And it made me happy.

"Did Arthur come to see me?" I asked them. Josh and Kacey nodded their heads. "Did Mom and Sophie come?" They both shook their heads.

"You fell asleep when Arthur left you, Ms. Solomon. That was about twenty minutes ago." Are you kidding me? It was a dream? But it felt so real! And I wanted it to be real! "Your mother and your friend were here waiting, but one of your friends said that they had to talk to them so they went outside."

No...why would they need to talk to my mother? And to Sophie? I felt the panic rise inside of me. With the littlest bit of strength I had inside of me, I tried to stand up, but the doctor quickly walked over to me.

"Wow, little girl. Wait. You shouldn't be walking," the doctor said. "Well, it's not that you can, but believe me, you are going to stumble a lot."

"I don't care!" I exclaimed, and it was true. "I want to know what they're talking about!"

My family came rushing toward me, trying to calm me down. I was fighting against the grip of Dr. Rifleman- I read his name in his robe- but everyone was against me now. But I fought. And I lost.

"Just stay there, Katherine. Don't hurt yourself," Josh said, his eyes staring at me as if I was alien to him.

"Fine. Then tell me who was shot," I said through clenched teeth.

Everyone exchanged glares, and I was getting tired of being the only one to not know. How come even my family knew when they weren't even friends with the victim? Why wasn't anyone telling me? My father whispered something to the doctor, and he sighed. I heard something about a petition between friends on not telling me, but then Kacey pointed out that the petition didn't exactly say I couldn't know. They couldn't tell me, but maybe they could show me.

So maybe I couldn't walk, but I could be pushed around in a wheelchair. I don't know who gave my brother the privilege to be the one to push me, but someone did and I was getting tired of hitting every single obstacle in the way. From trash cans to vases, it was as if my brother was playing some sort of video game with me. I'd wince every single time, and he would chuckle every single time. I swear I thought he was doing it on purpose.

My mom still hadn't showed up. So hadn't Sophie. Dad assured me that my friend just wanted to talk about how I fell. I didn't even want to ask if they knew how whoever-we're-going-to-see-right-now was shot or even where, because I didn't want to know I was in trouble just yet.
