Chapter 16: I Thought You'd Never Ask
I quickly shot up from the bed, looking at the clock on the wall that marked eight in the morning, while realizing I was eight hours too late. I ran to the bathroom, brushed my teeth, changed into some more crowd acceptable clothes and put my hair in a ponytail, ignoring the fact that it looked horrific. Because, after all, who truly would care about her hair at this moment?
Quickly, I stormed out of my room and ran to the kitchen. Sure enough, my mother was sitting there, sipping on her coffee while reading the newspaper. Her reading classes were falling and where hanging by the edge of her nose. Dad, on the other hand, was serving himself a cup of coffee as he looked at me.
"Morning, sweetie. How did you sleep?" he asked me, a smile on his face, almost as if nothing happened last night.
"I slept, so that's enough," I chuckled, but then remembered the matter at hands. "I need to go visit Sophie."
Mom let the newspaper down and looked at me with disbelief. "You're grounded, remember?"
"Mom! She needs me! As soon as possible!" I cried, afraid I wouldn't be able to convince my mother.
I could convince the authorities that I didn't go through some records that day in the office. But my own mother...that was another case.
"Mom...please," I begged.
"Call her," she said as if it was a silly teenage problem.
"This can't be sorted out through a phone call; it's more serious than that!"
"What makes you think that?" Dad asked as he sat down, occupying the chair across from my mother.
"Sophie wouldn't have asked me to go to her if it wasn't an emergency," I pointed out. And it was true. In Harold's death's case it was different, since I was miles away.
"You are grounded, Katherine Elizabeth Solomon," Mom said, pulling out the big full-name card that parents tend to use for only serious occasions. I've always hated my full name, but I have never hated it more than in this moments.
"Why? Because I was being threatened by another girl in my school? That's not fair! Sophie needs me, and I want to see her. Life is too short, I think we learned that with Harry," I said, not meaning for my voice to break at the end. Because even though I have been training to look strong lately, I was still a girl...a girl who lost her best friend.
Mom took her reading glasses off and looked up at Dad. It was obvious he wasn't going to say anything, so it was no shocker that he only sipped from his coffee and shrugged his shoulders.
I looked at my mother, filled with hope. Sure, I felt kind of guilty for using Harold like that, but some things just had to be done.
She sighed and looked down at the newspaper while putting on her reading glasses. "Be back by five."

I knocked on Sophie's door, not knowing what to expect. But one thing was for sure, I wasn't expecting what came.
Sophie was an only child; that I've always known. But that didn't mean she didn't have more family members; that didn't mean she didn't have a very...but I mean very attractive man as a family member...a man I had never seen before. I stood frozen at the sight of him, as he waited for me to talk. He probably thought I was stupid or something; and at that moment...I was.
The man was old. He wasn't grandfather old, but he was old. Kind of like in his 40's. You could only tell because of his nicely patched beard. But he was what put all the letters in attractive. Breathtaking blue eyes stared at me, as I forgot why I was there.
