Chapter 37: That Was All It Took

"You need to tell me now, Seth," I pressed, but he didn't even look into my eyes. He just kept walking those halls like if he knew them better than I did; perhaps he did.

"I don't need to, Katherine." He sighed, his eyes still not meeting mine. It wasn't easy having to follow his step. "Don't you have a silly little performance to put on right now?"

"It's not silly," I snorted.

Seth chuckled, tugging his hands into his coat's pockets. "Sure. Glee Live. Sounds promising. Wouldn't want to miss it."

"Okay, your sarcasm is not going to lead us anywhere, so would you please-"

His footsteps died as soon as we stepped the school building's entrance. It was his stop. Finally, he turned to face me, our eyes meeting. As always, he didn't look thrilled about my presence.

"Let's be honest here, Katherine. Neither of us have time. If you really want to know more about what has happened with Arthur then give him a call. You two were close," he said, with a shrug of shoulders. Then he smirked. "Music buddies, he had told us."

I grunted. "As amusing as my friendship with Arthur might sound right now, it is not helping. Don't you think I have tried? He doesn't answer any of my phone calls."

And it was true. I tried calling Ash, but after what happened, he sends me straight to his voicemail. He must be really pissed off about this, but why is he taking it all out on me?

He sighed; that long exasperated sigh you let out when you have explained yourself countless times and someone doesn't understand. Yes, exactly that sigh. "Listen, I know that all of this brings you back to too many memories and questions you want answers to, but you have to hold back your instincts.  We have control over this."

It was inedible; I rolled my eyes. "Yeah, sure you do."

"Hell, Katherine, I know it is too hard for you, but-"

"And why is that, Detective Patrick?"

"Don't use that tone on me."

"Why do you think it would be too hard for me to keep away?"

He chuckled, looking away. Then sniffed. "I know you think that you know-"

"-that sentence is confusing-"

"-but you really don't know a frigging thing. Not even the answer to my last question."

He really had no clue. Didn't he hear all the things I said back there? Or have I not find anything useful?

Nah, of course it is not that. The guys looked way too interested in the things I was telling them. The look on Mr. Blondie's face gave them away. Besides...the things they said. Also, I have a useful weapon...the cassettes.

You know, as soon as I get to actually finish listening to them.

"Kate," he said, softly now. "You have to let go. Can you do that?"

He stared into my eyes for a cold fifteen seconds, and then turned and kept on walking. Because he knew the answer. He knew I couldn't. And he didn't want to get more involved with me.

Three hours later, you could find me in my room, getting ready for the performance. Fanny was curling Gracie's hair, while on the other end, Claire thought it was a good idea to invite Whitney to do her make-up.

I was just practicing with my guitar, waiting for Ash to reply to my last message. Which said 'please, when you can, give me a call.'

But that was two hours ago...
