Chapter 19: You Mean My Heartbeats?

"Get over it!" Fanny snapped at me for what felt like the billionth time.

"But she looked so unsure of herself! It was like if she wasn't evil at all! It was like if...like if..."

"Like if she was just as scared as we are," Bryan finished for me. He tugged both of his hands on each pocket and then looked at everyone in the room, and finally at me. "I saw it too, Kate. I know it is scary, but I think that what Grace has discovered might be a bit more interesting."

We all looked over at Graciela, who stood in the middle of the small circle we had formed. It almost looked like a silly ritual, and part of me wished it could have been a simple silly ritual.

"I'm here!" Jerome exclaimed as he opened the door. I huffed and rolled my eyes with my arms crossed over my chest.

"Protocol says you have to knock on the door before you enter," I reminded him, not even trying to place nice with him.

"What? You want me to try that again?" he asked as he pointed back to the door he used to enter this room. I turned tables with my eyes, and he must have taken that as his cue to enter, because that's exactly what he did.

"Okay?" Graciela said, noticing the awkward tension between the two of us. "So, err..I will beg for you to take a position here," she told Jerome, pointing to the spot between Claire and Bryan. I looked over at Fanny, who only sighed at the sight of her boyfriend. "Well, let me begin by stating that they are watching us right now."

Like if we were programmed to do it, all heads turned, trying to understand her statement. But she just gave away a sly smile before showing us her laptop.

"I don't get it," Claire, who was stianding beside me, pointed out.

"Wait, I don't think you should say it here," Bryan said, but Grace only shrugged her shoulders.

"They can see us, not hear us."

We all exchanged confused glares as she looked over at the security cameras. "What is it?" Claire asked.

But I was afraid of what she was trying to tell us. "They hacked into the system?" I asked.

Grace only nodded her head as Jerome rolled his eyes. "Are you kidding me? The psychopath and the hacker? We're a total match for them!"

"Wait...but how did they do that?" Fanny asked, confused. "Those things are supposed to be so secure that they can't give away footage in some place further than the school grounds."

Grace shrugged her shoulders as she shut the laptop. "Give me a break. I can't think about everything for myself. I mean, this is just my prediction, but it is the only thing that was reasonable."

Jerome sat down on the couch and rubbed his hands against his knees. "It's not much information."

"But it's something," I countered. "And something is better than nothing."

They all exchanged glances, clearly looking more confused than ever. I thought they were going to let this entire thing go, but they couldn't. And it wasn't because this gave them an adrenaline that they craved for - although I am starting to think Grace did feel that way - but because they were already far too deep in this.

"We have competition to access Auditorium 7, by the way," Jerome stated.

"Who else could be interested in an old empty auditorium?" Bryan asked confused, leaning against one of the bunk beds.

"Whitney Baker. The blonde ninth grader who, let me tell you, isn't blonde at all," Jerome sighed.

Fanny mumbled something about Whitney under her breath, probably cursing the fact that we have competition.
