Chapter 39: Just a Face to Forget

"What the hell of a plan was this?!" Seth exclaimed, slamming the door to the Principal's office.

Wow, he knows how to make an entrance. Principal Wentzler was the only one in the room who was keeping calm. But me? I was shaking. Like a frigging stupid maraca in a Mexican festival. Mr. Blondie was running his hand over and over again over his face. He looked so unsettled; like if he didn't know what to do with his life. Until now. Now, that Seth was here.

"Are you here to criticize or help?" Mr. Blondie said, sighing at the very end.

"What do you think? I thought we had spoken clearly. We weren't going to do this!"

"It was our only chance!"

"You had another mission!"

"They are highly related, Seth, and don't you go telling me otherwise! You know this goddamned case!"

"Oh, for the love of God! Aren't you the one who is always trying to stick to protocol?!"

My thoughts exactly.

"ENOUGH!" Principal Wentzler yelled, but she didn't even flinch. She just stared at them; excuse me, she glared at them. "This was a plan that was approved by the police department. It was something that had to be done. Things didn't play out perfectly, but they played out and-"

"Did her parents approve of this?" Seth quickly cut her off.

There was a long string of silence, before the principal cleared her throat. "Her father said he was okay with it as long as nothing happened to the girl, which we-"

"And her mother?"

No one said anything then. And my mother? She would have yelled at me for even suggesting it.

"Goddammit, Samuel, do you realize in how much trouble we could get into?! That woman could sue us!"

"I was doing my job," Mr. Blondie said through clenched teeth.

"Your job was to figure out who was the one receiving those messages," Seth fought back.

While they were having their telenovela moment, I stared at them, and asked myself a lot of questions I was probably not going to ask right away. But right when Seth said that, I couldn't help myself.

"I'm sorry, which messages?"

Seth sighed, and Mr. Blondie placed each hand on each hip before giving Seth a daring look. Seemed to me like no one wanted the responsibility of breaking down the news on me. In fact, even Principal Wentzler looked like if she knew and she didn't want to be the one to give me bad news (and let me tell you, she has a PhD on giving bad news and not giving a crap.)

"Aren't you going to tell her?" Mr. Blondie asked.

"Your case right now," Seth defended himself, stabbing that moron with his own knife.

Mr. Blondie ran a hand over his face before pulling a seat and placing across from me. He sat down, then looked at me square in the eyes.

"We're afraid you've been trusting someone you shouldn't," he finally said.

"What?"

He sighed. "We can see the messages, but we can't find yet from which number or where to they are sent. We read one that said he'd be here, tonight. Then something about keeping an eye out for you."
