Chapter 24: Stories To Be Told
So there has always been something about blondes that I admire. People label them and quickly jump into conclusions due to a simple trait. They, however, face it with no problem. They ignore it and go on with their lives. Whitney Baker, I couldn't help but think, as she stood right by the door, has just taken it to another level.
We were careful. Not even a breath had come from us so we'd be heard. (Okay, so maybe it wasn't that careful, but that's not where I am going with this.) She seemed to have bionic ears or something similar, because she had caught us red-handed.
"What are you guys doing here?" She had pursed her lips and cocked a hip as she crossed her arms over her chest. Whitney was daring us; no doubt, but she wasn't trying at all to intimidate us.
For a while, there was a dead silence in the room. No one dared to talk, and I seriously thought that we were the worst team ever.
"I should be asking you the same question," Jerome said, gaining a so-much-needed confidence.
She scoffed and rolled her light brown eyes. "Are you kidding me? Are we really going to play that game?" Her footsteps echoed through the hallway as she made her way into the auditorium. The doors closed behind her as she took the image around her. "What is this place?"
"That's what we'd like to know," Grace said. Whitney didn't look convinced as she began to walk around the place.
"It looks like a computer room. Is it your little hide-out?" she asked us, as if we were the ones with complete access to this very room.
"You aren't supposed to be here, Whitney," Bryan warned her, but she just gave us a shocked look before letting sarcastic laughs escape from her lips. She was entirely conscious of the fact that we were in no position to tell her that.
"That line sounds familiar," she said, her cockiness sickening me. "Katherine! I didn't take you as a troublemaker." All eyes were now on me as I stood frozen. I stared at her like if she were a beast; an animal that was preparing its attack. But she just stared at me like if I was her worst enemy and she was enjoying my fright.
"What do you know?" I asked her. All features on her face frowned. She was filled with confusion, which came as no shocker to me. She didn't know anything. "What are you looking for in here?"
She stopped. Like if giving it a deep thought, she looked down to the floor. "This is not the place for us."
I didn't know what she meant. Maybe there was no deeper meaning to that. Maybe she simple said the truth; it was a Saturday and we were inside an auditorium that was supposed to be abandoned.
"Guys," Graciela's voice caught our attentions. She was staring at the monitors with a mortified expression. "The Principal! She's coming!"
It didn't take a full minute for us to quickly gather up every single thing we had and leave that auditorium. Whitney followed us, but not with the same fright we carried. We had made it to the entrance of the school, swearing we were out of trouble, when we heard her from behind.
"Kids!"
And our footsteps stopped. Our heartbeats were heard in the entire hallway as we waited for her to yell at us. None of us dared to turn until we were ordered to. And she did, so we turned to face our Principal.
Beside her stood a woman around her forty's. She looked so filled up of herself that it was almost unbearable. Her nose covered up most of her face, but she pretended it was no biggie. Her luxurious black hair must have paid up for it.
"Cynthia?" Bryan asked beside Claire. We all looked at him, his shock taking over him.
"Bryan, my dear. How are the boys doing?" the woman asked, her fake smile being remarkable.
