Chapter 12: The Eighth Step
I have to admit that my life has turned into something surreal. I have been facing all these random mysteries and all, but I have managed to leave everyone from my past out of it- well, everyone except Harold, that is. But here I was, standing corrected.
The empty streets were being illuminated by the lamp posts. No one passed at this hour, but it wasn’t weird. The only things you could find in this part of town were my old school, a few abandoned locals, and a video rental that is opened until eight in the night. The sky didn’t shine since we had a new moon tonight, but that was one of the perks on why we should have chosen tonight to meet up. Finally, all that was left was the powerful wind that filled the silence as I waited for a response.
“I asked you a question!” I exclaimed, hoping he would reply.
“Scared, Solomon?” he asked in his mocking tone.
Dylan has never been a saint, let’s put it like that. He must be the cockiest guy I’ve ever met; the reason for my hate. Ever since Harold and I started being friends, he did his best to make my life impossible. How, you ask? By being the cocky bastard he is. I didn’t even know what a player was until I met him. He’s break the heart of every girl he’s meet- my sister not being excluded. Dylan was older than us by just a couple of years, which was totally noticeable in his strong physique.
“I am not scared,” I hissed at him, but he only scoffed in return. “I’m terrified, okay?”
“You thought you were going to see someone else, didn’t you?”
“All I can tell you is that once you took that hoodie off and I saw you had an eye patch on…”
“The tragic summer of 2013 came back to you,” Dylan finished for me. Something about the way he said it made me feel like if I have been making a big deal about nothing. Yet, both of us standing here knew that was, is, and will always be a big deal.
“You know better than to come like that,” I fought.
He crossed his arms over his chest and bit his bottom lip. “You don’t ever change.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” I took steps back, kind of scared of the way he was looking at me.
“You remain pretty, I have to hand you that,” he teased. I felt the urge to just jump and tackle him- it has always been a dream of mine.
“I wish I could say the same thing.”
Even though my eyes were as firm as a stone, I knew my voice was shaky. He kept on taking steps closer to me, until I reached a dead end; the wall.
“Why have you always been this frightened of me?”
Then something came into my mind. Was he the one doing all this? Was he really the cause of all my pain?
“Please don’t tell me that you…”
“I’m not your stalker, Solomon.”
With that being said, I knew that out of all the stupid things Dylan Avenue had ever told me…this was by far the most useful one.
“So you know about this?” I asked him.
He placed his hand on the wall and looked down at me. Something in his eyes caught my attention. His eyes resembled a sea of secrets. Who would think that out of everyone I knew from here, Dylan would be the one to keep things?
“That’s a cute jacket. Did you want us to match?” he teased, a playful smirk placed on his face.
“I swear, Dylan, that if you don’t answer my question I will beat the shit out of you,” I said through clenched teeth.
