M.J. Arlidge once said, "Trust is a fragile thing--hard to earn, easy to lose, and one of the hardest things to get back." Amanda would agree emphatically. She had always had trouble placing her trust in anyone but when she met Spencer, it was different. Maybe it was because he was easy to talk to or because he seemed to care about her in a way nobody, save Kristen, ever had. Or maybe she just really liked the way the sun reflected off his warm brown eyes. Whatever the reason, she trusted him from the moment she bumped into him her first day at Caltech.

Perhaps it was foolish, the pedestal she had placed the man on in her head. After all, nobody ever reaches people's expectations in reality, but she couldn't help it. Everyone in her life was bad but Spencer was the least bad. Sadly, being the least bad doesn't make you good. It wasn't until Amanda's world slowly began to come crashing down that she realized just how much trust she had in Spencer and just how little he had in her.

____________

The beginning of the end started not too long after Amanda agreed to let Seaver finish her cadet training with the BAU. She honestly didn't see anything wrong with it and Prentiss said she'd supervise her. Everything went well for the first month. Things didn't get bad until later.

Spencer told Amanda after the 15th hospital they had gone to that he didn't want to go to another one unless the headaches got really bad. He claimed that he could handle the headaches and didn't want to hear that he might be having a schizophrenic break again so she agreed. Reid thought that would ease her worries but it didn't and the more upset she got the more he felt himself getting annoyed by her concern. He didn't know why but he just couldn't help it.

That's why he started to pull away. Amanda didn't even notice at first because she was too concerned about finding a way that would prove he wasn't crazy, but Spencer had convinced himself that her worry was selfish--that she didn't want him to have schizophrenia because she wouldn't be able to handle it, just like his father. Perhaps that's why he sought out the younger blonde.

Since the moment she arrived to consult, Seaver had paid Spencer excessive attention, even the socially awkward genius had realized it. Sure, sometimes she was mean to him but so was the rest of the team and she, unlike Amanda, was willing to pay him attention without asking if he had a headache at any point in the conversation.

Now, Amanda wasn't a particularly jealous person. She was confident in herself after years of getting over the insecurities that had been beaten into her by her father. It wouldn't have even bothered her if Spencer had gone to Seaver to just talk about things, even his headaches. No, what enraged her was that he went to her, a girl that so obviously liked him that even he had picked up on it, to complain about their relationship.

Even Spencer knows that going to someone who is already trying to interfere in your relationship to complain about it means that you either A) are using the person who has affections for you or B) are trying to leave or cheat on your significant other. Either option isn't painting Spencer in a particularly great light.

This is how Amanda finds herself sitting in their room, staring blankly at the wall, waiting for him. As far as she knew, Spencer didn't know that she knew. It had happened very fast and she didn't think anyone but maybe Emily saw her.

She had left her office after deciding that she loathed administrative work more than her father...well maybe not that much but you get it. Looking for any excuse, she decided that the crappy break room coffee that the bureau had decided would save them money would do.

She could hear the flirty giggling from three feet away but she didn't think about it too hard, she didn't think it would be that important. But when she opened the door, she heard his voice.
