The quote, "Funny how just when you think life can't possibly get any worse it suddenly does," by Douglas Noel Adams had never rung truer to Amanda than the month following her fight with Spencer.
Kristen was quickly approaching her due date, only having around three weeks left and Hotch was a complete mess. Unlike when Haley was pregnant, Kristen was not put on bed rest which only managed to worry the eldest Hotchner more. He was constantly concerned that she was going to fall while they were on a case and something would happen to her and the baby like Jessica wasn't constantly checking on the brunette beauty and Jack.
His worry took his attention off the cases they worked, meaning the rest of the team had to pick up his slack. This wouldn't matter usually but between them having to do the fieldwork JJ used to do, Prentiss's attention being put towards training Seaver, and Spencer and Amanda both unsure whether they broke up or not, things weren't going smoothly. The only small bit of luck they had was that they had only received about two cases this month and it couldn't be more of a Godsend.
At first, nobody noticed Spencer and Amanda's tension. It was easy since Derek, who was usually so acutely aware of these things, had his own office a bit away from the bullpen so he wasn't out there often to notice Spencer's longing stares at his girlfriend's office. Then there was Emily who had received extremely troubling news from an old friend that her old flame/assignment Ian Doyle had escaped prison. Luckily, everyone thought that Lauren Reynolds, her persona while investigating Doyle, was dead. Still, the thoughts of the life she lived kept plaguing her.
The first to notice it was actually Seaver because Spencer had started completely avoiding her. He would give mumbled or single-word answers when she asked him things so she brought it to Emily's attention. Emily, glad to have any sort of distraction from her worries, happily took it upon herself to try to detect any tension. Always one for gossip, she shared it with Garcia who told her favorite BAU agent.
After learning that the man he thought of like a brother was having relationship problems and hadn't come to him, Derek confronted Spencer who told him everything except for his headaches before asking him to talk to Amanda for him. Derek reluctantly agreed, thinking it would be better for Spencer to speak with her himself.
This is how the light-skinned man finds himself struggling to bring the topic up as he practices combat training with Amanda. He finally takes his shot while she's helping him up after taking him down. He clears his throat. "Hey so, Reid told me that you two got into a fight," he says, forgoing any type of joking, genuinely concerned for not only his friends but the team's dynamic. He's shocked when Amanda rolls her eyes.
"Did he seriously ask you to talk to me? What, does he not trust me enough to even talk to me now?" She scoffs and Derek holds up his hands.
"Woah, there, Amy. I never said that. Spencer just asked me to talk to you because he was worried. He says you were really mad at him and he didn't want to make things worse. He just asked me to tell you he was sorry for going behind your back. He said he knows it was wrong and he would take it back if he could."
"Yeah, well, he can't and if he wants to apologize, he should swallow his pride and talk to me. Now, I came here to practice combat but clearly, you have other things on your mind," she bites out when she hears her phone begin to ring. She heads over to it and sees the name Virginia Medical on her caller ID. She frowns, wondering why her former employer is calling her, before she answers. "Amanda Hotchner."
"Hi, Ms. Hotchner, my name is Dr. Wentworth. I did Dr. Reid's MRI a couple weeks ago," the voice on the other line says and Amanda frowns.
"I think you must be mistaken, Spencer didn't get any tests," she says after she walks into the locker room so as to avoid Derek overhearing, not wanting to reveal Spencer's secrets even if she is angry at him.
