"I still can't believe she's dead," says Youngji, my classmate.

I hear this same conversation almost every day now.
Everyone talks about her.

My phone rings, cutting through the gloomy atmosphere.

"Happy birthday, babe."

Instantly, a smile curves my lips. "Thank you, Jungkook-ah. I thought you'd forgotten," I say, pretending to sulk.

"Mmm... Sorry. I was working last night, so—yeah. Sorry."

"You worked until late?"

Jungkook pauses. He realizes he just slipped up. "The deadline was tight, so yeah... I stayed late."

"Aww, my poor baby..."

He chuckles. "I'm fine. Let's have a birthday dinner at my place."

"Oh..." I bite my lower lip. "Jungkook-ah, I'm really thankful, but I can't. I have cheerleading practice tonight. We're short-handed since the captain... you know. We have to change some of the choreography and be ready by Tuesday. I'm so sorry."

Jungkook pushes his tongue against his cheek. That bitch is dead, yet still causing problems.
"Ah, it's okay. What about this afternoon?"

"Hmm... let me check my schedule," I say, swiping through my phone gallery.
"Oh, I have class until 5 p.m. Your office ends at 6, right? And my practice is at 7... so, how?"

Everything's too tight.

He thinks for a moment. If he tells me he's leaving work early again, I might get suspicious.
"What about lunch break? Do you get at least a couple of hours?"

"I do! From 12 to 3!" I say excitedly. Of course I'm thrilled—spending part of my birthday with him means the world.

"Perfect. I'll pick you up around 12:30."

"Alright!"

"I can't wait to see you. I love you."

"Me too, honey. I love you too."

"What is it, Jungkook-ahhh?" I ask, laughing as he covers my eyes and carefully guides me.

"Just a little more, babe," he says with a giggle.

"Aaahh, I'm so curious. Hurry!" I giggle and let him lead me, heart pounding with excitement.

He stops. "Okay. We're here," he says, uncovering my eyes.

I gasp. The room is glowing with candles, curtains drawn. A "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LOVE" banner stretches across the wall, and red and white balloons with confetti are scattered on the floor.

In the center of the room, a small round table holds grilled salmon, steak, and decadent desserts.

It's clearly meant for a romantic dinner. Gosh... I didn't expect him to be this romantic.

He watches my face light up with awe and joy.

"Do you like it?"

I turn to him, still in disbelief. "Do you even need to ask? Of course!"

I walk to the table. "Wait... Did you cook this?"

He laughs. "Not this time, babe. I didn't have enough time. But I was planning to cook for our dinner tonight, if not for your practice."

"Aww, that practice ruined everything," I say playfully. "But I had to. I feel bad for the team."

He pulls out a chair for me. "Thank you," I say, sitting down.
