Sitting curled up on the floor James mirrored your position, waiting. His head resting in the palm of his hands helplessly. Running your fingers through your hair you twirl the ends between your fingers.
‘Will you talk to me doll?’ his steel blue eyes glazing under the moisture threatening to escape pleading with you to respond.
Not knowing what to say, your mind still foggy, unsure as to why you thought he was Paul. ‘Who was on the phone?’ your voice so quiet he almost missed it.
‘Work babe, just work. I shouldn’t have got so heated. I never meant to scare you, please. Forgive me.’ James hands now hovered close to your skin but not daring to make contact. Raising your hand to meet his you pull it closer letting his fingers wrap around your face, his thumb wiping the tears from your stained cheeks.
As though breaking the barrier James scoops you into his arm, wrapping yours around his broad shoulders he lifts you up with a gentle squeeze as he sits you on his knee in the chair. Your heart starts to slow it’s pounding in your chest as the wave of exhaustion washes over you. Resting your head against his shoulder, closing your eyes nuzzling into his warm chest as he strokes the curvature of your spine, you drift off safe in his arms.
Stirring as the sun streams through the large bay windows you find yourself still curled into the lap of James, his hand encased around you like a blanket with his face nested into your curls.
‘Good Morning Beautiful.’ His voice sounded tired. Leaning back to look at his face those beautiful blue eyes shone red.
‘Good Morning. Did you not sleep?’ you delicately run your fingers through the dark locks of his hair that have fell forward to cover his face.
‘Mmmm, do you want coffee.’ Avoiding answering your question he stands, still carrying you in his arms refusing to let go he takes you to the kitchen. Swinging you round to carry you on his back instead you let out a small laughter as you kiss his cheek watching him pour two cups of fresh black coffee.‘It’s ok, I’m sorry how I reacted last night. I didn’t mean to freak, just with Paul and everything.’ Shooting James an apologetic plea.
Placing you down on the counter turning so he can pull your body back close to his. ‘You do not need to say sorry. How about we forget the whole thing, blow off work and spend the day together.’
Raising your eyebrows at his suggestion. ‘James Buchannan Barnes, the self proclaimed workaholic miss a day. You should be ashamed!’ placing your hand over your heart the playful tease raises to the surface in your tone. Planting a kiss on the tip of his nose, ‘as much as I would love to...I actually have a date.’
Jumping off the work surface you skip across the room fleeing the scene as Bucky chases after you. ‘What. A date. Since when. With who?’ his voice going higher with each question.
‘Peter Parker. From Tony’s lab.’ Your spurt out over a grin spreading ear to ear. ‘He wants to show me his very impressive technology.’
‘’I bet he does!’ grabbing you at the waist to pull you back, cupping your face, his lips firmly pressed against yours.
‘Whoa...he’s just a kid, no need to be jealous. It’s nothing, just some work for the expo.’ Winking before scooting as James taps you on the bum watching as you disappear into the bedroom.
‘Doesn’t mean he doesn’t like the older woman!’ He calls down the hall.
Popping you head back around the doorframe. ‘If I’m old your a fossil!’
