TW- blood

Flying through the city, the engine rumbles with the speed as you dart through traffic, arriving at Beatrix’s apartment block you sprint up the stairs praying she’s here. Skidding to a holt, you arrive to find Jade dumbstruck in the doorway, her eyes wide holding a phone in her hand.

‘Where is she?’ You question while looking over her shoulder to see inside. Unresponsive you grab Jade by the shoulders, your grip firmer than you expected as you hunched to her eye level. ‘Jade, is she home?’

‘No...Gone ...blood..’ not making any sense as she stutters through her words. Slowly registering the broken words with the worry on her face ...blood? Your body tensing as the adrenaline of panic courses through you. Picking Jade up by her elbows you move her out of your way where you can see for yourself. Holding your breath as you spot the fresh blood soaking into the cream rug laid out by the sofa. It can’t be Beatrix, denying the possibility you search every room calling out in hope. ‘Beatrix, Doll! Where are you? Come on Bee stop hiding.’

‘JAMES...’ Jade’s voice hollow with fear...’she’s gone. I don’t know...I don’t know what happened.’ Jade explained the phone call and how she rushed over here, found the door open and Beatrix gone. Handing over the phone in her hand, ‘She didn’t take her phone.’

‘Ok, ok ....’ you pace the hallway, running your hands through your hair as you try to figure out an explanation, why was there so much blood? Where had she gone? ‘Maybe she had a fall and one of the neighbours took her to the hospital, have we rang around?’ you dig your phone out of your jacket.

‘No, I asked around, no-one has seen her today. I don’t know what to do....where could she be? Why was she so upset? Have you spoken to her?’ Jade’s voice cracked as the tears broke the surface. Pulling her in close to consoling her you clenched your jaw, feeling your whole body stiffening.

You call the one person you trust. Steve.

Sitting in the front room of Beatrix’s apartment you all stare at the red stain on the floor silently. After explaining the misunderstanding at the office and why she was so upset no-one could explain what had happened here. Eventually Jade broke the silence. ‘We should call the police?’

‘No. Let me fix this..’ if someone has hurt her you need to make them pay, how can you do that with Police breathing down your neck.

‘No she’s right buck. We don’t know where she is, if she’s safe.’ Flinching at the anger born by his words Steve places his hand on your shoulder reassuringly. ‘The more people looking for her the better.’

‘’Fine.’ Your voice sour. ‘But be warned, if me and my guys find out someone has her before them, you best hold the cops back because I won’t.’
