Sat quietly at the table, James still hadn’t turned up. Jade shot you a sympathetic look from across the table as she reached out to hold your hand. Not wanting to join in the conversations, worried as to what was keeping him your anxiety began to build. Another crash of nausea smacks you in the face, hastily making your excuses you exit the table to head towards the bathroom.

Trying to call Bucky once more the phone rang out until it reached voicemail.

Waiting out the rest of the evening tucked away on the balcony of Jade and Steve’s Penthouse you sit on their wooden bench in the open air. Watching the sun set over central park, you can hear the music and laughter drifting into the skies from the halloween parades below, trails of lantern lights and torches flickering between the streets below.

The chill of the night air sending shivers across your skin, rubbing your hands across your forearms to ease the onset of goosebumps under the friction, Happy’s cheerful tune beacons behind you. Being a true gentleman as he is, placing his jacket over your shoulders his soothing voice addressing your worry . ‘No James tonight?’

You had kept yourself secluded for this exact reason, ‘I’m not sure where he is Happy.’ The tone of your voice translated perfectly in his reflection. ‘He was meant to meet me here and promised he would be on time, but I haven’t heard from him and he isn’t answering the phone.’

Sitting on the bench besides you, Happy offers a reassuring gentle hug as he pulls you into his side. ‘I’m sure he’s just over ran a meeting, the clients in washington are ruthless let me tell you.’ rolling his eyes dramatically.

Letting out a small smile, ‘Your probably right.’

Letting go of the breath you have held in all night, you head back into the party. Taking a glass of water from a waiter you head into the crowd determined to not waste your first Halloween.

Jade had set up a carving station, selecting some of the tools and a medium round pumpkin you place yourself down at the table and begin your design. The cold strings of the pumpkin guts were doing nothing for your stomach that was now an olympic gymnast gold medalist with its perfected summersaults. After scooping the contents and dumping them into a bucket you can now begin to slice the scary features of your Jack o’lantern.

Proudly presenting your masterpiece at the centre stage of the counter, you note the evening coming to an end. Guests are staring to make their exits as the hired waiters clear the abundance of empty bottles and glasses.

Jade wraps her arms around your waist leaning onto your shoulder as she slurs her words. ‘ I’m so happy you stayed. *Hiccup* I’m sorry James never made it.’ Her hand reaching to stroke your face as you sulk at the sound of his name. There still hasn't been a word from him.

In an overly hushed drunken tone, Jade tried to secretly whisper, ‘I can’t wait to have a mini Beatrix or James to play with. There going to love their auntie Jadie.’ Dropping her hand to now rub your stomach you gently push her upright moving her hand away.

Laughing at the drunken state, warmed at seeing the excitement of your future you smile. ‘Jade, shh.’

‘Sorry *hiccup* SORRY!’ Her attempt at stealth failing, luckily everyone seemed to be too trashed to notice.

Rolling your eyes as you give her cheek a kiss as you call Steve over to take her to bed. Heading out the building you call back towards the couple now embraced in a drunken kiss ‘Speak to you tomorrow!’
