The dinner party was almost in full swing, appreciating the little details Jade had thought of made you feel proud, you had obviously rubbed off on her. Walking past the table noting the place setting were cute little skeletons flickering under the candle light of the centre pieces, your fingers Stoke over James name. You are so excited to see him but the knot in your stomach sent your brain into overdrive. You struggled to imagine his reaction but honestly, you really couldn’t tell what was going to happen.

Heading across the living room now filling with Jade and Steve’s friends, there were a lot of faces you didn’t recognise, not that it was easy to tell with all the costumes. Gazing out across the spectacular view over central park, a sea of orange and red flows against the crisp green on the grass. The leaves were creating a mesmerising palette of colour, capturing the autumn vibes as the cool sun shines through the light fog scattered across the surface of the lakes, a perfect October evening.

Gently twirling your hair between your fingers as you anxiously wait, Steve approaches from the side. Delicately brushing the side of your cheek with a kiss, his already heavy drunken eyes look over your costume. ‘You look fantastic!’

Feeling your cheeks blush under the complement you let out a nervous laughter.  ‘Thanks. You too.’

Steve was dressed as Marty Mcfly, channeling his inner youth as he tried to scoot across the smooth flooring on a skateboard. The scene resembling Bambi taking his first steps across the ice, his arms outstretched trying to balance himself before tumbling to the ground, you couldn’t help but smile.

‘Here have a drink?’ Noting you didn’t have one he grabbed one of the berry cocktails off one of the passing service staff to hand to you.

‘Oh, no thanks.’ Panicking for a reason why you were unable to drink without being obvious you blurted the first thing that came to mind, ‘designated driver.’

Shrugging as he gulps down the drink. ‘Your loss!’

Time seemed to be going so slow, fidgeting with the sleeves of your dress you have taken yourself to the far corner of the room. Unable to enjoy the party, you are constantly on edge, your heart skipping a beat every time someone entered the room to repetitively checking your phone for an update. Your Gomez should be here any moment.

Racing through the city streets you arrive at the penthouse. Rushing across the room to change into the costume laid out on the bed, a pinstriped trailered suit and hat, your  thankful Beatrix hadn’t settled on some outlandish costume. You were comfortable in a suit.

As you tie the laces of the black and white brogues you hear the voicemail machine kick in.

‘Hello, this is a message for Miss Beatrix Miller. It’s Dr Christine Palmer your Obstetrician, Gynaecologist. Apologies I will have to rearrange your pregnancy scan appointment from tomorrow due to an unexpected emergency. I will send you an email with the new date and time. Speak to you soon.’

With a single beep the tone went dead.

Pausing in the deafening silence, you sit back into the chair struggling to process the information you were recieving. ‘Pregnancy...she’s pregnant?’

The world around you stops spinning as your mind goes numb, by the time you gather your thoughts your not sure how long you had bern sat for.

Taking a deep breath grabbing your keys you run to your car.
