My dress arrived. I quickly put it on. I looked in the mirror admiring my dress. It hugged my body perfectly. It shaped my hips beautifully. My hair was done perfectly. I took a deep breath. Then I got out of my dorm. I passed everyone in the common room. I felt eyes on me. This made me even more nervous.
"Nice wig! What is it made of?" Daphne Greengrass yelled from a side of the room.
"Your mom's chest hair!" I savagely replied.
My comeback made the whole room erupt in laughter. Daphne scowled as everyone laughed at her. I saw Crabbe and Goyle hitting each other in the middle of their laughs. I snorted at the scene.
"Hey. Knight! Who is your date?" Pansy asked.
She came over to me. She was wearing a disturbingly vibrant pink gown. It would probably make my eyes hurt if I stared for too long.
"Diggory." I said. Then I quickly left.
.
Pansy and I were pen friends. She never really cared who I made friends with. But out of the corner of my eyes I saw Draco eyeing me up and down. His mouth parted a bit. I ignored it. Then I went to find Hermione. She was waiting for me.
"There you are. You look gorgeous." She let out a sigh of relief. She complimented me warmly.
"As do you. Now. Let us go!" We giggled together. Then we made our way to the Great Hall.
We could hear soft music playing. Everyone was well dressed. They were gathered in the hall. We peeked from behind a wall. We saw Harry standing with one of the Patil twins. Fred and George were nowhere to be seen. Maybe they were already inside the hall.
"Show time."
We both walked down the stairs. Parvati looked at us. She whispered something to Harry. Then Harry looked at us with widened eyes. I saw Cedric walking towards me with a bright smile. I smiled back at him. He came up to me. He took my hand. Then he gently kissed the back of it.
Hermione's date was Viktor Krum. Our dates stood on either side of us. Then they took our hands. They led us inside the hall.
The champions entered one by one. Everyone else was standing on either side. They were clapping for the champions. Harry was behind us. Hermione was in front. I waved back at Cho. She was waving at me from the crowd. I saw Ron and George standing together. Both were scowling their faces off. Fred stood beside George. He was comforting him. He waved at me. I waved back. I noticed George's date was Alicia. She was one of the Gryffindors. I felt like someone stabbed me in the chest right where my heart was. I ignored the raging flame of jealousy. I held my head high. I swung my hips as I walked.
The champions were the first to take the dance floor. Cedric took my hand. Then he walked me to the center. He wrapped his arms around my waist. I wrapped mine around his shoulder.
"Do not let me fall. Diggory." I jokingly warned him. He laughed softly.
"Not in my nature." He smirked.
We danced gracefully. We had a very pleasant dance. He was a complete natural. I was scared of tripping. I did not want to embarrass myself in front of everyone. Soon the others started joining in the dance. Dumbledore danced with McGonagall. Filch was dancing with his cat. I saw George aggressively dancing with Alicia. But his eyes were fixated on me the whole night. I felt his burning gaze on my back. It happened every time I turned away from him to face Cedric.
"Why's George Weasley staring at me oddly." Cedric took me by surprise. I looked at him. Then I shook my head.
"He would have asked me if he truly wanted to go with me. But he did not." I said. He chuckled softly at my response.
Fast rock music was played by the Weird Sisters. The band was fronted by Jarvis Cocker. The crowd was jumping up and down. We all danced like crazy. But certain people were missing from the floor. Harry. Ron. and George were slumped down some distance away. They looked utterly miserable. I came up to them with Hermione. We had just had a great time with Viktor and Cedric.
"Hot. Is it not? Viktor has gone to get us some drinks. Care to join us?" Hermione asked. I joined them after excusing myself from Cedric.
"No. We would not care to join you and Viktor." Ron scoffed at Hermione.
"What has got your wand in a knot?" Hermione asked. She gave me a confused look first.
"He is a Durmstrang student. You are fraternizing with the enemy." Ron spat. Then he started walking out of the room. Hermione followed right behind him.
"Are you going to ask me to dance or not?" Alicia asked George. His eyes were shooting sharp daggers at me.
"I'm done in." His voice was cold and empty. Alicia stormed off in anger.
"What was that all about?" I asked him.
"Why do you care? Go dance with your date." He venomously said.
"What is with the sudden change of attitude?" I shot back. He stood up to face me.
"Nothing. Your date must be waiting for you." He said. Then he started walking out just like Ron did.
"George. For the love of God. Be specific!" My body was now completely filled with vexation. I followed him out.
"He is using you." He said. We were now standing outside the Great Hall.
"How dare you! Besides. I am not an idiot. I know when people care or not!"
"I doubt it. He is even older than me."
"What? Is that truly what you think?!" I shouted at him.
I could not believe why he was acting this way. It was very childish of him.
"Yeah. That is exactly what I think."
"You know the solution then. Do you not?" I spat. My throat was tightening up. My eyes were on the verge of tears.
"Go on." He said. His voice was completely emotionless.
"Next time there is a ball. Pluck up the courage. Ask me before somebody else does. Do not do it as a last resort. Now I get why you are being such an arse to me."
A single tear slipped from my eyes. He noticed it immediately. I saw his eyes soften for a moment. But he did not show it openly. He tried his best to stay cold.
"Well. That is completely off the point." Harry walked up to us just then. He looked in our direction. I stormed straight over to him. Hermione joined me too.
"Where have you been?" Harry was completely startled by my sudden outburst.
"Never mind! Off to bed. Both of you."
Hermione shouted. Then she started crying bitterly. Harry and Ron quickly walked away from us. I turned back to George. He was staring at us. He now had company. It was none other than Fred.
"And you!" I pointed my finger directly at Fred. He looked at me. He was completely frightened.
"Take your brother out of my sight. Do it before I kick both of your arses."
I threatened them. Fred quickly pushed George. They both ran towards the stairs for dear life.
"They get scary when they get older." I heard George say while running. Then they disappeared up the steps.
"Shut up!" I yelled after them. I sat down on the stone stairs crying. Hermione sniffed. She joined me. She sat right next to me.
"What happened between you and Ron?" I asked her. I sniffed in between my words.
"Same as yours."
