Looking at the salesman ,Jeb felt like he was not being entirely honest , but this place had potential and was safer than out there .Even if he had lied , people seemed kind here , and if Pezzie was happy, that was the only thing that mattered.
• What about Pezzie , ask Jeb
• Don't worry , with you working on the field , im thinking that this Is more than enough for the both of you ,said Flinn before shaking his hands ,but its late in the afternoon , why don't you enjoy you evening and we will start work tomorrow.
Jeb left the interview ,wondering just how laid back this place was , sure they had given him an interview , but it was mostly easy stuff ,they wanted him to work but not today , even right now , they didn't know him , but they had let him roam freely ,he understood the feeling of safety but it was the apocalypse, it changed people . Jeb decided to go see the field , no harm there since it was gonna be his next workplace , what he really wanted to do was to go see Thomaz, ask him what had happen to Justin, but he couldn't risk his place nor Pezzie place . He arrive at the field they had manage to do quite a bit of work , it was better than he anticipated , they had potatoes, tomato , corn , cabbage and some oats . They were small, Jeb could tell the soil was dry , and of poor quality , but with proper care nothing would be lost . He saw a woman there , of a certain age , probably late thirty , was she in charge .He decided to introduce himself ,he approach and said
• Hi there my name is ,
Before he even finished he saw her flinch, that wasn't a jump scared , she was nervous .Jeb wondered why she was nervous, she had no reason , if life as a farmer thaught him one thing its how , peacefull it was .
• Oh hi , she finally said , im Rebecca
• Im sorry I didn't mean to scare you , Im Jebedaiah, im suppose to help you from now on
She offered him a sweet smile , she reminded him of his wife , which reminded him of that night
-Its fine don't worry , it's the apocalypse and I hope you know what your doing
,she said seemingly relieve
Jeb told her what her field was missing , told her the basic, hoping she would give him a fair chance , while he was talking another thing had his mind occupied. The way she had said ''its the apocalypse'' was similar to the way Finn had said it , but he brushed it off as a mere coincidence.
• We are having a gathering of some sort tonight, said Rebecca, you should come
• A gathering , ask Jeb surprised
She laughed
• Most people don't like eating alone , she said
Jebedaiah thought about declining ,it had been a charged day , beside if truth be told ,he had missed Pezzie , he loved that kid , he just hope he didn't use her to replace his own kid .Thomaz would be there which was as valid of an opportunity as any .
• Sure ill be there, thanks for the invitation, he said
He went back to his new home ,hoping to at least find Pezzie .As he walked in the house ,She ran to him to hug him .
-Sure took you long enough, she said
- Hi pumpkin , how are you ,was your day any good , he asked
-This place is odd ,its safe but people are afraid , the adult are nice enough but the kid are quiet , too quiet , its bizarre .
He had forgotten how sharp she was , she had arrive at the same conclusion he did ,on one hand, he was thankful she had changed , she was a survivor she had what it take to make it in this world , on the other hands she was growing up to fast , a part of him was hoping this place, would offer them a feeling of what normal life used to be . He was starting to think it was too late , when he went to his knees and looked in her eyes ,saying
• I know, I felt the same thing , but lets figure it out ,lets find what exactly is the problem before we make our decision, whatever happen I got your back , im done being reckless
She hugged him harder , they grab the gifted lasagna and headed to the place where they where suprisingly holding these gathering . The place was lively the adult were laughing , joking around , Pezzie was right the table of the children was quiet , too quiet .
• Ah the guest of honor, happy you made it , said Finn smiling , do you mind if I present you two to the people , then we will sit and eat, id love if you taught Thomaz how to use a gun , since we are pretty much the only two ,who goes outside these wall .
That was not what they had planned, but he would talk with Thomaz , another thing was odd, why would the leader of the community, always be on the outskirts .He shook a few hand and met everyone , this reminded him of a church gathering , all these people were really nice , not one of them made a bad impression , he saw Rebecca sitting alone which strike him as odd , but other than that it was a nice evening . Once he was finally at the table , he saw Thomaz , he saw the answer to all of his question.
-Hey Thomaz ,how are you , ask Jeb
- good evening ,M. Jebedaiah , again, im so glad you decide to come to our town, he said
- Thank you , Thomaz, how you holding up , you got a beautifull place running here
- Isn't it something ,i mean a place like this existing , I mean it's the apocalypse ,I really was hoping Jay would have come for you , he loved you
There was that sentence again , it's the apocalypse ,said in a similar way once again. But it didn't matter, what mattered was that he knew exactly what happened , to Justin this world was unforgiving no place for cold case .
-Thomaz how did you find that place , what exactly happened, why did you and my son got separated , please I know im asking a lot, but I need to know
The ever smiling youth , became serious , and said
-It wasn't easy , we were broke , I was part of some clinical trial , this one was very lucrative, next to no explanation given but still, Jay went in for me , he came back and fell asleep as the street were overflowing with infected, I try all I could ,I swear Mr.J ,but Jay wouldn't wake up , I thought him dead , please forgive me sir
Thomaz was in tears , Jebedaiah felt awful , but the clinical trial rang a bell, he remember his time with the old man who was talking about how his daughter in law had done the same thing and had bitten her son, he hugged Thomaz whispering
-its okay, its okay , you were his best friend and I know how much you two helped each other .
So much for discovering the truth , thought Jeb
