prologue

It's a world in which humans and merfolk live side by side. Centuries ago, after the two races discovered about each other's existence, they decided to coexist peacefully.

Instead of referring to them as merfolk, the world simply decided to call them hybrids.

As they continued to live together hybrids blended in with the humans, adapting to their lifestyle. Aside from having specialized doctors, they lived just like regular humans, and with time talking or asking about one's race slowly became a taboo.

Hybrids are part fish and part human, living among regular humans and looking just like them. They have an affinity towards water and often can breathe underwater too, but unlike the stories told to children, they can't grow a fish tail.

The male hybrids are born sporting a small patch of vibrant, colorful scales either on their upper arms or abdomen. White scales can also be seen, although they are rare and usually symbolise a more feminine genetic build.

Compared to them, females are born with a patch of colourless, white or very light scales below their collarbones.

Unlike humans, hybrids are born with a soulmate, whom they can discover when they reach adulthood. Female or male couples are just as usual as mixed gender soulmates, having a dominant mate (usually males) and a more feminine mate.

Very rarely a hybrid can be born with two soulmates instead of one, but many think of it as a myth since people rarely found their second soulmate, even if they had one.

Soulmates are usually hybrids of the same sort, both having the same type of animal as their animal side.

After reaching the age of 19 years the soulmate bond can be triggered, and a small tattoo in form of the individual's hybrid animal appears on their wrist, in the colours of their mate for females and in their own colours for dominant hybrids.

When the bonding has happened, the soulmates start experiencing changes to their animal side. The lighter hybrids, usually females, start taking over their mate's colours, becoming colorful or patterned to resemble their other half.

Changes occur in the colouring of the dominant mates too, as their colour can become lighter, body be scattered with light scales here and there or the colours of the two mates blend.

As the bond between the soulmates becomes tighter, they also start to feel each other's emotions.

This story will be about three close friends, who have finally reached their adulthood and begun their new journey through life.
