2010
Before entering 5th grade all children have to go through a medical checkup and get their shots. Since the checkup is a bit different for hybrids and they have special doctors, schools don't organise them for whole classes but individually.
School papers do contain information about one's race as it's written on the birth certificate of every student. Knowing that, the appointments at the clinic are made so that the students don't cross paths, which ensures keeping their privacy.
Then... how could Renjun and Donghyuck meet at the clinic?
Their little encounter was all thanks to Donghyuck's youngest brother. The little guy picked up a virus at the daycare a few days before Hyuck's scheduled appointment, and managed to get their whole family sick for almost a week.
After his sick leave was finally over, Mrs Lee took him to their family doctor to get his checkup. Coincidentally it was the same day Renjun had his appointment, and as that hybrid hospital was the closest to both their houses and school, the two found themselves in the same building.
Now it was only up to luck whether the two would cross paths in the 10 floor tall building. Despite the low chance of them meeting, the higher forces decided to let them run into eachother.
Renjun wasn't too surprised to see his best friend there, as he already had his suspicions about the tanned boy. Donghyuck on the other hand was very much shocked, but quickly regained his composure and this newly found information about his best friend made him giddy.
After the unexpected meeting the two boys decided to talk about it and open up about their animals to eachother. They found out that both were of the same hybrid type, as their animal parts are Betta fish, which also made sense for their urge to argue often.
Huang Renjun, the dark blue Betta hybrid, finally understood why he enjoyed bickering and fighting with his best friend after that coincidental meeting at the hospital when he was ten years old. He felt comfortable with him and connected as they found out that they were more similar than they first believed.
This made not only the two best friends but also their families get closer to one another. Renjun and Donghyuck became inseparable ever since then, going through the changes puberty brought upon them together.
They also could freely express their opinions on their soulmate destiny. Just like how they were polar opposites in many things, their stances towards finding their soulmates were different too.
Hyuck was set to go out and find his mate as soon as he turned nineteen, planning to find them before he turned twenty. He was so set on this that he almost forgot about his soulmate's age, or rather the possibility of their age gap.
Growing up in a big family with loving parents made him wish for the same. Just like his mother and father, he dreamed of a college romance, getting married after graduating and making many memories together before getting kids.
Renjun on the other hand decided to let fate do its thing, and believed that some day he would eventually meet his mate. Instead of searching and constantly thinking about all the possibilities he decided to just mind his own business.
His plan was finishing university and getting a job without distractions, but if life decided to make him meet his other half, he just hoped they would have the same point of view.

When Seol entered their lives a year after that meeting at the hospital, the two boys did talk to eachother about their opinions on her, but quickly dismissed the possibility of her being a hybrid.
Why? Because she was not interested in guys. And that seemed to be enough for the 11 year old boys to come to a conclusion.
Her lack of interest in the opposite gender might have been only because she was focused on her studies, but somehow that thought got stuck with the guys for a long time.
