Chapter 17

I woke up the next morning with a terrible headache and a weird sensation. It felt like my head was pounding and I groaned, putting my head under my below. It seemed as if all my senses had heightened somehow and everything sounded ten times louder. I could hear the tick tock of the clock even though the room wasn’t quiet and mum heading upstairs. Just then she knocked on my door and although it might’ve been lightly, it sounded as if she was trying to break the door. She opened it and I could feel her questioning gaze on me. “Honey, are you ok?” she asked, concern lacing her tone. I groaned again as the headache grew. Suddenly, it all stopped and I was overcome with darkness.

I awoke to the sound of a heart monitor beeping next to me and looked around the room. I was in a hospital; I sat up and realized with a start that my killer headache had lessened. Just then a nurse came in the room and started checking the machine next to me. “Oh, you’re up?” she said smiling politely. I nodded.

“Yh, where’s mum?” I asked her.

“Your mother is waiting outside, I’ll go and get her” she replied walking back out. I remembered exactly what happened but didn’t know why. It had all started suddenly. I heard the door opening and mum came in. “Hey sweetie, how are you doing?” she asked, coming up to sit on the edge of my bed. “I’m ok. How long was I out?” I asked her. She looked nervous and didn’t want to tell me. “Oh, you don’t need to know, you’re better now and that’s all that matters” she said smiling.

“Tell me” I demanded. She sighed.

“Ok, 1 week” she replied.

“What?!” I asked her in shock as the doctor came in. She was a petite woman in her late 20s who looked trustworthy and very intelligent.

“I see you’re up” she said smiling. I nodded.

“What happened?” I asked her.

“It was a minor problem. The reason is still unknown but no need to worry. It didn’t do any damage” she explained. I nodded, absorbing the information.

“How long was I out?” I asked her. I needed to confirm what mum had told me.

She hesitated before replying “A week” she answered.

“Really?!” I asked her and in reply she nodded.

Something was definitely going on and I had a feeling this was only the start. “Ok, so when do I get to go home?” I asked her.

“Well, we’ve given you some drugs to make you feel numb to help with the pain and chemical changes in your body. The changes are assumed to be connected with hormones and growth, so no worry there. Anyways it’s dangerous to discharge you now however the drug will wear off in two days and then you can go home” she explained. I groaned, two days in hospital? Urgh! “Is something wrong?” the doctor asked noting the change in my mood. I shook my head. “No, no, I’m fine” I lied, smiling. She nodded.

“Ok, I’ll leave now. If there are any problems please call me” she said before leaving. I looked at mum before putting my head back down and falling asleep.

Mum’s P.O.V

I smiled as I watched my baby girl sleep. She seemed so peaceful and angelic. I looked at the time: it was 4:30 and my meeting was in half an hour. My lawyer had told me he needed to discuss some important details with me. I grabbed my car keys and left the hospital. I was having a hard time coping with everything that was going on and I still had to deal with the funeral. On top of all that, I was still mourning for my husband who was safely in heaven. I smiled up at the sky hoping he was up there watching me and giving me strength.

I arrived at the lawyers’ office 1 minute late. “Sorry, I’m late” I said sitting down. He nodded and got out some files on the desk. I saw a picture of a man and wondered if that was him. “That’s the murderer” he explained and I nodded. He was a balding guy in his 30s who looked high and I hated him with everything inside me. He was the reason my daughter didn’t trust anyone, my husband was in heaven and my world had turned upside down. “Ok, so the court date is coming up and we need to discuss some important things” he explained. “Oh and we found some CCTV footage which showcases the scene. Would you like to see?” he asked me cautiously. I debated whether or not I should then decided I should. I nodded and he played a video. I recognized my husband’s car driving down a narrow, steep hill and suddenly a lorry driver came full speed and crashed into his car. It was horrific and a few tears slipped down my cheeks.

After the meeting I drove back to the hospital to check if Selena had awoken. I walked up to her room and saw her sitting in the bed, eating a cheese sandwich. It was important that she ate healthily because she wouldn’t be able to feel hunger. She looked up and gave me an innocent smile which made my heart melt. My daughter looked so different now, her skin was paler than usual and her tawny brown eyes were now glowing and honey brown. She noticed I was staring and smiled. “How are you feeling honey?” I asked her. After finishing her bite she put down her sandwich before answering “Much better, can’t wait to get out though.” I nodded and sat down on the comfy chair next to her bed.

Once Selena had finished her meal, the doctor came to check on her before she fell asleep. Looking down at her, she looked just like an angel. I smiled and got comfy on the chair and just as I was about to drift off Selena woke up, panting. I ran over to her.

Selena’s P.O.V

I’d had another nightmare similar to the one before. I was panting and sweating as I sat up in the hospital bed. I closed my eyes to try to control my breathing and calm down however when I         did the scenes from the nightmare replayed in my head and I snapped my eyes open. Mum was right beside me in flash and whispered soothing words but it was no help, I was too scared. I started shivering and it felt as if the temperature in the room had dropped suddenly. Mum noticed this and wrapped my blanket around my shoulders. “Do you want to wear my coat?” she asked and I nodded vigorously, not having the ability to speak as my teeth started chattering. She bought her coat over and I wore it, feeling much better. Just then the temperature rose back to normal. “Mum, did you notice the temperature change?” I questioned. She shook her head. What was happening to me?

Mr. Saltzman’s P.OV.

As I sat at my desk, grading history papers my thoughts wondered to Selena. She hadn’t been in for almost a week now and I had a weird feeling it had something to do with me. Did I scare her away? I thought but then shook my head, shaking the thought away. That was ridiculous…but then what was the real reason? I heard she was in hospital but why? Just then my phone started ringing; it was Kristopher Vincent, my best friend. “Hey Chris. What’s up?” I asked.

“Nothing, just decided to check on you. How is she?” he asked me. I debated whether or not to tell him the truth when she spoke as if reading my mind “Just tell me the truth Charles” he said. “She…..she’s not well” I explained. “She hasn’t been in school for a week, she’s in hospital” I heard Chris gasp before replying “D-do you think she’s going through the change?” he asked me. I considered the idea, why hadn’t I thought of that before?.

“Maybe” I replied. I heard him sigh.

“Ok, go and check on her. I’ve got to go now but keep me updated” Chris said hanging up.

I sat back down on my desk, deep in thought when someone came in. It was the receptionist and I could tell she had a serious crush on me. “Yes?” I asked her looking up. She flashed me a perfect smile. “I was just wondering if you were bored….” She trailed off. I groaned inwardly but didn’t let it show. Although I wanted to rip her neck off I restrained myself, remembering my manners. “I’m fine thank you” I answered politely, smiling right back. Her face fell and her disappointment was visible. “Oh, well…….do you mind if I stay here….I’m kind of bored.” She said. This woman was getting on my nerves. “You can go home you know” I suggested nonchalantly pretending to mark the books. “I….I have to wait for my friend here” she lied. Such a bad liar also, I expected better. I got out of my chair, walking towards her. She seemed excited and her face lit up. I looked her straight in the eyes. “You will go home” I said, compelling her. “I will go home” she repeated in a monotone and got up, walking away. I rolled my eyes, packing my stuff before heading home as well. Well, that was a long day.
