Chapter 27
The trees loomed over my small figure as I struggled to stand up. The forest around me was silent apart from a few rustling sounds which could’ve been the animals but I knew better. Someone was after me. Finally I managed to untangle my legs from the twisting branches that lay scattered on the forest floor. I got up abruptly but felt a sharp pain in my ankle. I looked down to inspect the injury and realised it was bleeding and possibly fractured from all the running. I didn’t know how I got here or why. All I knew was that someone was trying to capture me so I ran deeper and deeper into the forest trying to escape the person. I grit my teeth, ignoring the pain and decided to limp. I had to get away. Before I could even take three steps I felt a cold hand on my shoulder causing my heart to beat at the speed of sound. “Look who we have here” came a husky hiss from behind me. I whipped my head around and screamed at the man standing before me.
“Selena! Selena! Wake up!” someone screamed but it sounded distant. I felt as if someone was shaking me but I was still stuck in the forest. Suddenly I was drenched in a cold liquid causing me to shoot straight out of my bed. My eyes fluttered open to find that I was in my room. I shuddered from the cold water and glared at mum who looked down. “What was that for?” I asked in annoyance. “It’s not my fault! You were the one shouting like crazy from your dream” she snapped throwing her hands up in the air in frustration. “Fine, fine” I rolled my eyes.
“Get changed and come downstairs” she said walking towards the door.
“Why?” I asked, eyeing her retreating figure in curiosity.
“Just do it!” she snapped before she left the room. I sighed and did what she said.
Voices could be heard from downstairs as I neared the staircase. I snuck a quick glance in the mirror to make sure I looked presentable as we had guests. As I slowly descended the stairs the voices became more louder and I could make out what they were saying. “Is she still sleeping?” asked a man. I raised my eyebrow. “Oh no, I told her to come downstairs. She should be here any minute now” my mother replied sounding rather polite, as if she was talking to her clients. I took that as my cue to enter and make my presence known. When I walked in, I spotted Kristopher Vincent, my ‘real’ father. “Well hello dear” he greeted. I plastered a smile on my face.
“Hello” I replied back. I took a seat on the opposite couch. Everyone was quiet for a moment but thankfully mum broke the silence before it could get awkward. “Kristopher is here for your decision honey” mum explained. I nodded. Shit, that. I still don’t know if I want to go I thought in my mind. “That’s ok, you still have time until Charles gets here” Kristopher said suddenly referring to my history teacher. “Did you.........did you read my-” I began.
“Yes, I read your mind” he answered. After staring at me shocked face he let out a low chuckle. “What do you expect? I’m a vampire” he said.
“Yh but reading minds and stuff are in movies. I thought vampires in ‘real life’ aren’t like vampires in movies” I said putting air quotes in ‘in real life’ I still haven’t gotten over the fact that these supernatural beings exist in real life. “Yh well sometimes they’re similar” he replied.
Soon Charles arrived and situated himself on the couch as well. “So Selena you decided yet?” he asked me. “I.......I......I have” I replied. Before taking a long sigh I said “I’ll go” Everyone’s face suddenly lit up and mum engulfed me in a big hug. I almost fell of my couch but managed to stand.........or should I say ‘sit’ my ground. When mum pulled back I noticed she had tears in her eyes. “I’ll miss you sweetie” she whispered, her voice thick with unshed tears.
“I’ll miss you too mum” she replied bringing her close for another hug.
Our flight was tonight at 8:30 and I still had 6 hours left. I went upstairs and finished the rest of my packing before placing my suitcase in the corner of my room. I sat down on the edge of my bed and stared blankly at my screen debating whether or not to meet some of my friends for the last time. Before I could make up my mind someone knocked on the door. I opened it to see my mother coming in with a tray of food and........blood. “Lunch is served” she sang ignoring the disgusted look on my face and placed the tray on my bedside table. She sat beside me and draped an arm around my shoulder. “You ok?” she asked. I sighed before giving her a short nod. She got up. “Ok, well I got you lunch.......I have to go out right now, you can call your friends over” she said, making my decision for me. I waved goodbye to my mum before she slipped out the door.
