It was the moment I’d been dreading: school. As I left my house and began the walk to school an uneasy feeling settled in my stomach. I wore an oversized grey hoodie paired with my black shades, my black skinny jeans and combat boots. I had tried to apply a darker colour of foundation to make my extremely pale skin back to its normal paleness. I still looked like a ghost, but at least it was better than nothing. Spring was slowly approaching and the daffodils lining people’s gardens were starting to blossom. Spring was one of those seasons which held hope and new beginnings and it lifted my mood.
As I arrived at the gates of Connors High School everyone was walking slowly to the main building or chatting by the steps. I put my hood on and started walking to the lockers when someone grabbed me by my elbow. It was Aaron. I looked at the ground trying to avoid his penetrating gaze. “What do you want?” I snapped, anger boiling inside of me. However I was shocked when he pulled me into a big bear hug. “I’m sorry” he whispered with so much sorrow that I instantly regretted being mad at him. He pulled away and looked at me in the eye. “I’m sorry for acting like such a jerk” he said looking down. I smiled sadly. “I forgive you” I sighed. He suddenly looked back up with hope in his eyes and a grin on his face. He looked like a child who’d just gotten a big Christmas present. “Yes” I nodded and he pulled me into a quick hug muttering a string of thankyou’s. “It’s ok” I replied.
We parted ways since I had Chemistry and he had Geography after promising to meet later. I sighed as I entered Mr. Smith’s classroom. “Good morning Ms. McKenzie” he said giving me a short nod as I entered the classroom. “Good morning sir” I muttered taking my seat in the back row. Mr. Smith started writing something on the white board once everyone had arrived. He smiled when he turned back around and I read what was written on the board. In big capital letters read END OF UNIT TEST! I gaped and saw everyone else’s expressions pretty much mirrored mine. I could swear I saw him smirk but he quickly turned around and started handing out the test. “Do NOT open the booklet until I say so. Anyone who does will get half an hour detention after school” he instructed. I didn’t know how Mr Smith got away with giving us tests without telling us before hand. Once he’d handed out everyone’s test booklet he went back to stand at the front of the desk. “This is the test for the end of your Basic Chemistry topic. I didn’t tell you to revise because I want to see how much you’ve learned. Since this is the higher set, anyone who fails to get less than 75% will come back for an hour after school and redo it. It’s now 8:10, you have 45 minutes. You’re time starts now” he said and everyone quickly opened their papers and started. I looked at the first question and thought: Yup, I’m screwed.
At break I grabbed lunch and put it in my bag as I was going to spend my lunchtime in the field. “Watch where you’re going freak!” someone snapped when I accidentally bumped into them.
“Reagan?” I asked. The girl who I bumped into turned around and I saw it was her. A slow smile appeared on her face. “Hay, how ya doing?” she asked me.
“Fine”
“Cool, wanna hang out again today?”
“I....uh.....” I began.
“Oh come on, it’ll be fun” she winked. I was going to protest once again but decided against it.
“Alright I’ll come” I sighed, giving in.
“Great! I’ll text you the address. Gotta go, bye” she waved and disappeared into the crowd.
French passed by agonizingly slow since I barely understood a thing. We had a French substitute and she clearly thought we were French since she didn’t say a single word in English. I groaned once she turned to me. “Selena, cette phrase est correcte?” (Is this sentence correct?) she asked me pointing to the board. I looked at the sentence on the board. It read C’est un bleu cavalier. “Non” I replied.
“Pourquoi?” (Why?) she asked.
“C’est le destin ‘C’est un cavalier bleu’” (It’s meant to be ‘It’s a blue jumper’) I replied. She smiled.
“Oui, oui, merci” (Yes, Yes, thankyou) she said.
I practically ran out the classroom to my next lesson as soon as the bell went. I had Art next with Aaron. Aaron smiled at me as I entered the class and I smiled back. “Ahh, Selena you’re back” Mrs. Susanne said. I had missed a lot of Art lessons since I was away. “Aaron will catch you up on our new topic” she said and I nodded and sat down next to Aaron. The title slide read Real Life Drawing and the starter was to draw a 3D flower. I decided to draw a rose and shaded it in whereas Aaron drew a tulip. I had to say, that boy had skill.
The bell rang signalling the start of lunch and I quickly packed my things, waiting for Aaron outside. He came out a few minutes later and we walked in silence to the field. Memories of the last I came here rushed to me as I remembered those boys teasing me and me getting into a fight with them. The piercing sunlight coated us we walked, setting a warm and peaceful atmosphere. Laughter and voices floated above us from a distance filling up the awkward silence which hung heavily in the air. We walked to the end of the field and then sat down on the fresh green grass. “So.....” he began.
“So......” I copied not knowing what to say. A slow breeze crept towards us and played with my hair which was open today. “What’s going on?” Aaron finally spoke, his voice slicing through the silence like a blade. “Huh?” I asked, confused.
“Don’t play dumb. You weren’t here yesterday and now when you come back, you’re acting all weird and you’re talking to me” he deadpanned. I sighed. This was going to a long lunchtime.
“I......I have a confession to make”
“Go ahead” he encouraged.
“I’m a vampire” I confessed. He looked at me and everything froze before he burst into a fit of laughter, rolling all over the lush grass. “Oh......my....God...I never knew you were so funny” he said in between laughter. I gave him a straight face and waited till he calmed down. When he did he looked at my straight face and shook his head. “You....You can’t be for real” he said. I shook my head. “Why would I lie to you Aaron?” I asked.
“But....how? You’re a werewolf. You’re my mate” he said.
“I am but I’m half. I’m a Dhamphiric lycanthrope because my mother was a werewolf and my father was a vampire”
“Oh” was all he said.
“Yh, and now I need to go to New York after a week to my parents to learn more about......myself”
“How long are you going to be gone for?”
“To be honest I have no idea”
“Oh and what about me? I’m your only mate right?” he asked in desperation.
I shook my head sadly and saw a torn look on his face which made my heart shatter into pieces. Without realising I reached forward and stroked his cheek. “I’m sorry” I whispered so quietly that only he could hear.
After lunch I had History. I came in earlier than everyone else and found Mr Saltzman sitting on his desk reading the vampire diaries. “I told him” I said causing him to look up with raised eyebrows. “My mate” i explained.
“You’ve found your mate?” he asked incredulous. I nodded.
“Yh, my werewolf mate is Aaron Skiezer, he goes to this school” I answered.
“Oh.....what did he say?” he asked.
“He was quite upset”
“Oh” Everyone started coming in after that so I went and sat down on my desk and waited for the lesson to pass.
