Chapter 24
Selena’s P.O.V
I woke up abruptly drenched in a thick layer of sweat. My bedside clock read 5:12 and I shot out of bed as a sudden wave of nausea hit me causing me to fall back. I gulped and tried to focus on the ceiling because everything was spinning. Suddenly black blotches appeared in the corner of my vision as everything slowly faded to black.
“She....she’s awake” I heard a male voice close to me. My eyes fluttered open to find Mr Saltzman and my mother staring at me. I tried to sit up but a sharp pain shot through my stomach as I cried in pain. Mum rushed towards me and helped me lay back down. “Just lay down sweetie” she instructed. I looked between the two of them as everything from yesterdays night came back. “I.....I’m a vampire?” I said but it came out like a question. My mother nodded and kept her eyes fixed on the wall behind me. “Why?” I croaked my throat tight with unshed tears. My mother looked at me then, her face distorted with a mass of emotion. She looked ready to break down but contained herself. “Now is not the time to discuss this Selena. You’ve just had your first feed and your body needs time to process it. It will take time so rest for now” she spoke, her voice surprisingly steady. I managed to nod. “H-How long will it take?” I asked, aiming the question at Mr Saltzman who hadn’t spoken yet. “You’ll be up and running by the end of today. I’ve got to go now since school is about to start but I’ll leave some blood in case you get really thirsty” he explained, his voice full of confidence. “I’ll be back after school but if there’s an emergency then just call me” he said to my mother who nodded weakly.
After everyone had left my room I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling wallowing in self pity. Everything looked much sharper, the colours, the lights. “Mum!” I shouted and winced at my shrill voice. In an instant mum barged into my room looking frantic. “Is everything alright, darling?” she asked.
“Yh, can you just turn the lights off?” I asked her. “It hurts my eyes” I explained. She nodded and switched off the lights. “Anything else?” she asked. I shook my head and watched her go. Resuming to my thoughts, I wondered if mum knew that I needed to go to New York with my biological father. Should I go?..................................Well, if it was absolutely necessary then I didn’t really have a choice. I kept on thinking and thinking about what would happen next when suddenly Aaron appeared in my thoughts. Suppose he WAS my mate, then what? Only werewolf’s have mates, but what about my vampire side? I groaned audibly and closed my eyes. Everyone had a lot of explaining to do
Catherine’s P.O.V
It was 11:30 and I was sitting on the worn out couch with Charles beside me. A heavy silence had fallen upon us since he’d arrived an hour ago as we debated in our heads whether to wake up Selena or not. I glanced at the clock yet again. “So......how’s the vampire world?” I joked, trying to lighten the mood. “It’s ok” he replied grinning.
“I, uh, think we should maybe wake her up now” I suggested. He gave me a slight nod and I rushed upstairs to wake up my baby girl. Once I entered her room I found her sleeping soundlessly on her bed. She looked just like an angel and I regretted how I treated her in the past. I kissed her on her forehead and sat down on her bed replaying the moment when Florentia first asked me to take care of Selena.
“Catherine, there is something I must tell you” Florentia explained. I nodded. “You know how my relationship with Kristopher is already wrong according to the law” she began. I nodded once again. A tear fell down her cheek and I reached to wipe it away. “What’s wrong Florentia?” I asked. She looked at me with glistening eyes. “Me and Kristopher had a baby” she burst out and broke into tears. I enveloped her into a hug and waited for her to calm down. “We.......We.....need.....you.....to take......care of her” she said in between sobs. I pulled away from her and looked at her in shock. “What? No Florentia, I can’t do this” I said. She looked at me pleadingly. “Please Catherine, please! You’re my only human friend, my only hope. If we keep the baby and go into hiding, they’re bound to find us! You HAVE to understand” she begged gripping my arms and shaking me. I was left speechless. “But......but the baby isn’t human. How will I take care of it?” I asked her desperately. “She’ll be just like any other human baby until she turns 16, then she’ll go through changes but don’t worry, we’ll come when she changes” Florentia explained, trying to convince me. “But...” I began but was cut off when my husband entered.
