Chapter: 22
I follow Jen and Anthony to our English class and we choose seats in the back. Anthony chooses and seat next to me and Jen is in front of me. We talk quietly before the bell rings. Mrs Wells, a lady in her late 40's or early 50's with done up blonde hair and a plaid long sleeve dress on. I had her for English last year and she's nice. She hands out the syllabus to us and then we go over it. She hands us copies of The Scarlet Letter before telling us this will be the first of 6 books we will read this year. Normally I would be overwhelmed but English is my best subject and I'm pretty sure I have read all the books we will be reading for the year. She assigns the first 3 chapters as homework and then she lets us talk or start the reading for the last ten minutes of class since it's the first day. As I am about to tell Jen and Anthony something Katie turns around. She is sitting a few desks ahead of Anthony.
'I'm shocked to see you Jo, I wouldn't think you would be smart enough for an AP class. Didn't all that dope over the summer rot your brain?' She says with a dirty look.
I just smile at her 'No it didn't, thanks for asking' She rolls her eyes and Jen laughs a little.
'Whats so funny new girl? You should be nice to me cause if you talk to someone like that you're going to have a hard time. What's your name?' She asks her.
'I'm Jen and I can make my own choices thanks' Jen says.
'Where are you from? Where does your family go to church? My father is a minster at Church of God. He also runs the youth group if you're looking for one to join. It's a swell time' she says smiling hoping to bring her to the light.
I smile just waiting to hear what Jen will say and I can't wait for Katie's reaction.
Jen smiles and tells her 'I'm Jewish so thanks but no thanks'
Katie's face goes from a smile to a frown that would kill a puppy.
'Eww gross, another fake religion. You're almost as bad as the hippies' she says 'You're both going to hell anyways'
Jen then turns to me and says 'Wanna carpool? I'll bring the beer' Anthony who has been listening but staying out of it lets out a chuckle and I can't help but laugh too. Katie turns around in a huff as we continue to laugh.
'Whats her deal with you guys?' Anthony asks.
I shake my head 'I'm not sure. A few years ago her father took over the church and since then she has been trying to convert the sinners with her little friends. She hates anyone that she thinks is a hippie' I tell him.
'She's kinda awful' he says as the bell rings. We nod in agreement and walk out the door.
I say good bye to them and walk over to my math class. I see Patrick leaning by door waiting for me. As I see him he reaches his hand out and gives me a quick kiss and leads me into the room. Darcy is sitting at a desk as we walk by hand in hand. She gives a huff and an eye roll and we take out seats in the back next to each other. This class is pretty much the same as the last. Teacher gives us a syllabus and a math text book and then assigns some homework. It's only the first chapter so it shouldn't take too long. We go over the first chapter wasting no time even though it's the first day. He ends the lecture when the bell rings. Patrick grabs my hand and laces our fingers together. I can't help but smile. We walk to our lockers and I put my math book, folder and notebook in it. Patrick and I walk to the lunch room still hand in hand. He gets a sandwich, chips and a coke for lunch and I grab a fruit cup and an apple juice and follow Patrick outside. I see Jimmy, Jen and Molly sitting at a table under a tree.
'Hey guys' I tell them and sit down and Patrick sits down next to me 'How's classes so far?' I ask opening my fruit cup and popping a grape in my mouth.
