The Second Girl

Waking up was not the easiest thing to do. And when I finally did and decided to get up, I noticed that Newt wasn't in my bed with me. It was fine, since he had his own room, but it did make me feel slightly lonely.

When we all were lining up for Frypan's breakfast (he was making crepes), we suddenly heard the alarm for the Box. We all looked at one another confusedly, as if one of us could explain why this was happening. A couple of Gladers rushed to the Box. I didn't: I wanted food. Newt was among those who went to the Box. That was alright; he was Second-in-command, after all. "Thanks, Fry," I said to the cook. I didn't have to wait as long, since half the line had left to investigate.

I sat to eat my food and Newt came over with a note in his hand. He got some food from Fry and sat next to me, "it was another girl."

"Really?" I inquired, excited that there would be another girl in the Glade. Perhaps she and I would be great friends! He showed me the note: 'she's the last one ever'. "Weird." Did that mean that she was the last girl, or the last Glader? Was she a wolf, too?

"I know. She's unconscious but she woke up for a second, gasping for breath. And d'you know what she said?"

"What?" I began to wonder if she'd said something in wolf-speak. That was a definite tell for whether or not she was part wolf.

"'Thomas'." Newt replied with a chuckle.

"That's weird... do you think she has her memories?" I asked.

"Who knows? She lost consciousness as soon as she said it. A lot of shanks are already accusing Thomas of working with WCKD or having something to do with her."

"And what do you think?" I asked, biting into my crepe.

"He looked so buggin' confused, I don't think he had a clue." His face was lit with a humoured smile.

"Uh... Newt?" I began, a few minutes later when I'd finished my breakfast.

"Yeah?"

"You didn't tell me about the Changing. And I'm not happy about that."

"What... what do you mean?"

"Gally. I was told he wouldn't want to be around me, and that he'd be different and that he wouldn't want to spend time with anyone." Newt said my name, trying to interrupt me. "Let alone his best friend. Last night, he told me that he wanted me to be there for him. And where was I?"

"Listen, I-"

"With you. And you were content to smile along and hide this from me." He didn't have anything to say. "I'll see you later. I'm going to see the girl."

She was in the Homestead, under the care of the Med-jacks. She had long, dark hair and pale beige skin. "Is she alright?" I asked Jeff.

"She's not moved a muscle. Thomas said he doesn't recognise her, even though she said his name back in the Box," he explained as he milled about the room, putting various medical items in cupboards.

I sat in the chair next to the girl and picked up her scent, memorising it - as I had done with almost every other member of the Glade. "She smells like she's just come out of a science lab," I stated. Not that I knew how I recognised the scent. Jeff shrugged as he handed me a glass of water, "thanks, Jeff." He'd always been nice to me, ever since I was brought in here after being in the Maze in my wolf form. He pulled up a chair to face me, also holding a glass of water.

"I wonder what job she'll have," he said to me.

I looked at her, thinking. I wasn't sure. "Maybe she can get us out of here." I pondered. It was a half-joke.

Jeff sighed, taking a sip of his water, "wouldn't that be something..."

I breathed in through my nose, trying to pick up any scent from the girl that I might recognise. She was completely human, that was for sure. Any science lab-scent that she'd been holding in her clothes was quickly fading. Even in sleep, she was gradually becoming part of the Glade, as if this was the sort of place that took teens away from wherever they were from, removed their memories and then turned them into completely new people: like a messed-up survival mission with a cup of amnesia.
That's what it was, really. Just messed up. I really wanted to meet this girl. I'd have a sister, a new friend. I only hoped she was nice.
