Another Night in Prison

Newt gave me the werewolf book to read (and an electric torch) so I wouldn't get so bored if I couldn't sleep. He insisted on carrying me to the Pit, not wanting to put anymore strain on my injury. Gally joined us for the walk, holding a bundle of food wrapped in cloth. He noticed I could smell it, "yes, it's for you," he said. I smiled, thanking him. "Do you want one of us to stay out here with you?"

"No," I replied, "you go inside and stay warm."

"She's got Tommy in the other side to keep her company, anyway," Newt assured him.

"But I don't get food," Thomas' voice mumbled from inside his part of the Pit.

"She's part wolf and recovering from injuries," Gally explained bluntly. I could tell he didn't really like him.

Newt carried me into the Pit and gave me the book and torch. When he climbed out, Gally handed me the bundle of food. They locked me in and we bade goodnight. A moment after they left, Thomas said "so... what are you in for?" I laughed. "What was that book?" I was surprised he could see it in the low lighting.

"A werewolf book. We got it sent up a while ago but we didn't read much of it - Newt said it would stop me from being bored." Thomas said he hoped I'd enjoy the book, and that he was going to sleep because Minho would let him out an hour before the Wake-up so he could run in the Maze. I wished him luck, and opened my bundle of food as I opened the first page, clicked on my torch and started reading.

~Two hours later~

I had read 5 chapters and learnt why the Glader who was banished for kissing me lost his clothes when he transformed: because it hadn't been my choice: I had the power to make anyone I wanted a werewolf - so long as they were compatible - and if I did not intend to kiss them, they would not have the same abilities as me. I had also learnt why I was so tired on one day of the month (new moon), and still somehow struggled to sleep on the night of it. The language chapter was the longest so far, with a complete alphabet and translations of words and phrases that would be used most commonly. I'd long finished my food so decided to stand up and stretch myself before continuing on the next chapter: 'Heat'. I'd read some of it before with Newt, but there must have been more...

~One hour and a half later~

I was partway through chapter 8: 'Immunity and Abilities'. The book explained why I hadn't been Stung when attacked by the Griever: I was immune! The boy who was banished probably didn't have that ability. I also read that any allergies I had would not affect me as much as they did previously, but on new moon, their affect on me would be worse. I wasn't aware of whether or not I had any allergies, but I assumed I'd be okay. I yawned, stretching myself again, before I decided that it would be a good idea to sleep. My torch was flickering anyway: losing power. I clicked it off and put the cloth inside the book on the page that I stopped at. I could hear Thomas snoring softly on the other side, "goodnight," I whispered to him, before carefully laying in a comfortable and painless position and settling to sleep.

The next morning, I could hear whispering and shuffling: Minho had arrived to let Thomas out. The sun was just beginning to rise. I closed my eyes, deciding not to wake up yet... until I heard my name. "What?" I grumbled, looking up through the bamboo bars. Minho's face was poking through.

"Catch!" He said, tossing a snack bar to me. In the Glade, our packaged foods were wrapped with compostable materials. We didn't remember much about our own lives, but we remembered that plastic was an issue in the world, so ever since the Box started coming up - or so I was told - there was no real plastic in sight on everything that was wrapped. Proof: the litter decomposed within a month.
I opened the snack bar and started munching on it. "Newt'll be out in a bit to let you out." Minho called as he left with Thomas.

 I thanked him, "have fun!"
