Red Eyes Blazing

Katsuki knew something was wrong before he opened his eyes. The dread was clawing at his chest, making everything feel dull but panicked at the same time. He almost didn't want to open his eyes, afraid of what the outcome would be.

Katsuki doesn't fear, though. So he opens his eyes and regrets.

The room is empty. It usually is since Deku always gets up earlier than him, but this is different. It's the kind of empty that was  present when Izuku had been at the arena. Stale and cold. With Izuku here, the emptiness of his room was snug and warm.

It made him panic himself out of his half-awake state. Tears were already gathering at the corner of his eyes at the mere thought of the situation that he hoped wasn't true. Getting increasingly frustrated with the blankets tangled around him, he rolled out of bed and crashed onto the ground. After finally getting detangled from the blankets that he almost blew up, Katsuki wildly looked around his room. He noticed how the yellow backpack next to his desk was nowhere to be seen, but most importantly, he noticed an envelope sitting on his desk.

He runs over to it and tears the envelope open. His hands are mini earthquakes and his lips tremble with a heartbreak seconds away from happening.

The handwriting is amazing, and it's Izu's. Katsuki doesn't want to read in hopes of delaying reality for as long as possible, but his eyes are already devouring the too pretty words.

Dear Kacchan,

I'm not going to say much. The more I write, the more difficult it will be to leave. It's already going to be near impossible, so this is going to be short.

I know you figured it out already. You're so incredibly smart Kacchan, but being smart isn't always a good thing, is it? I'm saying goodbye. No, that's not right. I will never say goodbye to you, Kacchan. How about "see you later"? Yeah, let's settle on that.

I have a few things to take care of, but I promise someday I will tell you why. I'm sorry I can't give you a solid reason. World knows that you deserve at least that.

Thank you for being there for me with every step I took. Could you thank Auntie and Uncle for me too? They've done so much, and I wish I could say it in person.

Enjoy your childhood and have fun. There's plenty of great people who are waiting to meet you. Could I please be selfish and have a special place in your heart? Even when I'm gone? I know I don't deserve it, so I understand if you hate me. You can hate me, just please don't forget me.

I have to go. Thank you, and I'm sorry.

See you at U.A.!
Izuku Deku Midoriya

Katsuki drops to his knees and silently sobs. He wants to tear up the paper, or explode it. Make the evidence of his best friend's departure go up in smoke. He doesn't, because it's the only thing that proves that Izuku was here and that he's going to come back someday.

Katsuki wants to hate him, and for a second he thinks he might. The thought burns away because it's impossible to hate the one person who can light up your day with a smile. That doesn't stop the acidic rage and hurt burn its way through his heart though. He's felt rage and sadness before. He's even felt remorse and loss, but this is unlike anything he's felt before. It's like someone ripped open a wound that was only just starting to heal.

Before he could process what he was doing, Katsuki got up and ran outside. He ignored his parents' shouts, ignored the weird looks people gave him, he ignored everything. At least, he tried to. The one thing he couldn't ignore was his heart breaking.
