We talked for a while. Long enough that Layla said she had to get home. I hugged Layla before she left and closed the window behind her. Laura told me she was going to bed too. “But you should tell that guy that you like him, Luna. From what I've found out today, he sounds like someone who needs a little bit of TLC.” She said before leaving my room. I went to close the door but smiled softly again. My mom had already said she thought Warren seemed like a good person at heart.
Though I wasn't so sure my dad thought the same of him. But I guess it was more because he didn't quite understand everything yet. I wasn't so sure I understood everything myself. So I couldn't blame him. I took some clothes out for school tomorrow so I didn't have to get them out in the morning. I picked a red shirt out with a pair of black jeans.
My hair would stand out a lot with darker colors, but I thought it would look nice. I would have to make sure I kept my hair back as well. I touched the necklace Laura had given me. The half heart charm was becoming my reminder about how things could get better even if they seemed bad. I got ready to go to sleep, turning the light off.
My alarm went off in the morning. I got up and turned it off. Since it was still a bit early, I had plenty of time to get ready. So I grabbed my clothes and went to take a shower. The red shirt didn't make my hair stand out too much. The color was a bit bright, which looked pretty good with my hair color. I pulled my hair back with a headband after getting dressed. Having both of my eyes visible was going to take some getting used to.
Hopefully, there weren't too many questions people were going to ask. But I knew there would still be some questions. But I should be able to answer some or most of them. I just put on my normal black pair of sneakers. Making sure to grab my phone before heading down.
My backpack would still be downstairs waiting for me. Along with a little sliver of Devil's Ivy. Since it could grow quickly in case anything happened. It was like a shield. I wasn't sure how certain others would react to how I looked now though. It was a big difference from how I looked the last time.
I thought I remembered someone saying Lash, Speed, and Penny were not going to be allowed back at Skyhigh. That was a good thing. They helped Royal Pain try to turn everyone into a baby! They were practically villains from the point they found out Gwen was Royal Pain and stayed quiet about it.
I grabbed something to eat before everyone else woke up. I could already hear my mom waking up. I was already ready for school, and the bus wasn't going to be coming for a while still. Technically, I didn't have to take the bus. Considering I could 'hover' but I didn't know where the school was and I wasn't sure I could go up that high from the ground.
I didn't call it flying because I didn't do anything myself to stay in the air. I used the air to stay up. There was a difference. Not a big one, but there was one. It just wasn't worth the risk just yet. And if I didn't take the bus, I wouldn't be able to see Layla, Will, Zach, Ethan, and Magenta every morning.
I liked seeing my friends in the morning. Even if it took a while to get used to seeing them every morning. Especially Zach. It took a while to get used to his… specific kind of humor and way of speaking. But Zach usually meant well. He just had to learn that some of the things he said had different meanings. Ethan and Magenta were cool too. They and different perspectives on things I hardly understood at first. It really helped a lot when the topic was something a lot of kids grew up knowing, but that I hardly had any experience with.
I waited for Laura and our mom to come down before putting my bookbag near the door. Laura smiled when she saw how I was dressed. My mom laughed a bit. “Who's the lucky guy?” She asked. To say I blushed, was an understatement. “Okāsan! (mom!)” I replied, a dark red now. They both laughed. “Nani? Watashiniha musume ga dare ga sukika o shirukenri ga arimasu. (What? I have the right to know who my daughter likes.)” She replied.
I shook my head. “Moshi anata ga kore o suru koto o shitte itara, watashi wa basu ga kuru made Reira ni itte itadarou. (If I had known you'd do this, I would have gone to Layla's until the bus came.)” I answered. Our mom just smiled still. Laura seemed a bit confused. She was still learning Japanese though. But it seemed like she understood a little.
“I'm going to Layla's. I'll be back after school.” I said, grabbing my bookbag. “Wakatta. Anzen o kakuho shite kudasai. Itoshite iru. (Okay. Be safe. Love you.)” Our mom replied. I smiled. “Shimasu. Watashi mo aishiteruyo. (I will. Love you too.)” I answered. With that, I left and closed the door behind me. I made sure to text Layla so she knew I was coming over. She said it was okay to come over. So that's where I went. Though I found Will and Zach were already over there.
“Hey, Luna.” Will greeted me. I smiled. “Hey, guys. Did I miss some memo saying we were meeting at Layla's place or something?” I asked. Why were they all here? Layla seemed surprised. “Zach, you didn't add her to the group chat?” She accused him. Zach seemed to remember something. Group chat? “Sorry, I got distracted last night.” He replies. Layla took her phone out.
My phone received a ping seconds later. Saying I was added to a group chat with everyone. Will, Layla, Zach, Ethan, and Magenta. “We decided to meet up last night. It was Zach's job to add you. We just thought you were sleeping when we decided on it.” Will explained. I nodded. “Of course,” I replied, shaking my head. “You look different,” Zach commented after a moment. I nodded somewhat. “I just thought it was about time I stop hiding what I look like,” I replied. Layla smiled lightly. “That's great Luna. I knew you'd eventually come around to it.” She told me. I shook my head a bit.
Well, at least everyone seemed supportive about it right now. Though Layla had already known about why I hid my other eye since before school started. The bus was actually kind of late today. Which was odd. Ron was never late. “Luna, can't you just fly us all up to the school or something?” Zach asked. I sighed, shaking my head. “No, I can't. I can barely hover myself without lighting my eyes up. And I don't even know where the school is. So I wouldn't be able to even if I knew how to. I still have to learn to control these powers. I haven't even known about them for that long yet, remember?” I replied.
Zach made an 'oh, right' face. But I wondered what was taking the bus so long? We were all going to be late at this point. “Do you think Ron got sick or something?” Will asked while we walked up to the bus stop. I shrugged. “I don't know. I hope not.” Layla replied. I saw everyone else nod as well. Even from the first day of school, Ron was nice to everyone. Even if they weren't nice to him.
No matter what happened, we would still have to get to school. There was no point in missing out. But hopefully, someone came to pick us up. Otherwise, we might have to try finding another way to get up to school. Sky High was going to start any minute now. “Guess we have to get our parents to call the school?” I suggested. Will nodded. “I guess so?” He replied. How were we even going to school then?
They didn't send out some kind of bulletin saying the school was canceled for today right? Laura or our mom would have said something about it. I could just faintly hear some kind of whistling sound. “Everyone get down!” I exclaimed quickly once I realized what that sound meant. I swung my backpack around and took the Devil's Ivy out. Within moments, everyone was on the ground and we had a dome of vines over us. A sharp crash indicated whatever was coming hit the group.
I whined slightly. The impact created a sharper sound than I had anticipated. Everything was muffled now. I felt someone touch my shoulder lightly. It was Layla. She was saying something, but I could hardly understand her. She held one hand out, motioning to the vines. I lifted one hand next to hers, letting the vines drop. A big chunk of metal had crashed down the road from us. It was glowing almost and looked like it was ripped from something or was crushed.
Layla put an arm around my shoulder. My ears were starting to ring. She looked worried. I took a breath, closing my eyes for a moment. The sky was already darkening. My mom must have already seen the object fall. Maybe Laura or our dad heard it falling like I did. I opened my eyes again, letting them light up. Looking around for a water source.
